Everything Seth said and....not only get new/better shoes, get them properly fitted. Go to a place that looks at your strides and foot pronation to determine the proper shoes for you....like Dickpond or Runner's Edge.

Then just sack up and run through the pain until it goes away.

shoes are good (properly fitted by runners store, gait analysis - I don't pronate)...just simply going from running 6mi a week to 12-15...they end up curing themselves as the muscle comes back but in the meantime it hurts...iced yesterday so we'll see

brian you're probably striding too much on the ball of your foot (pushing with your calf), try to lean back a little and take shorter but faster strides. That helped me when I went from 3 mile runs to 6-7 mile runs frequently. My calves got tight as hell (just didn't have splints).

I definitely do run more on the front of my foot...was taught to as it's a more natural stride than landing on your heel...never paid much attention to my stride length...basically it's as fast as I think I can handle based on how much further I have to go...

thats how you sprint or run downhill in football (i was taught that way too... like walter payton did). with distance training you want to cut down on those longer strides as you're PUSHING to actually make them longer which is what is probably aggravating your calf muscles and giving you splints.

ever wonder why the older guys you see run take shorter steps/strides but do it in faster succession? this is why. It looks funny but then one day it made sense.

Fleet Feet on North & Wells.

You also should do some flexes before running, 20 reps of squats, 20 reps calf stretch, 20 reps hamstring stretch, 20 reps scissor stretches.

Actually, proper distance running technique is not on your heels but leaning forward and almost lifting one leg and with minimal pushing almost fall on the balls of your feet. I know, I was surprised to find that out too. Both my trainers and multiple marathon guys have confirmed and inundated me with articles to that effect. Running on your heels is not incorrect but it is more impact on your joints than the balls of your feet. Shoe manufacturers have worsened the effect by adding more and more cushioning to the heels of shoes which just makes us more reliant on them.

I tried those Fila shoes with the toes. I only got to walk around the store in them but they felt great. I am waiting for someone with real running experience to provide feedback. But, they promote a more natural running technique...ala the kenyans.

For the record, I have played with that technique and it is awkward, so for the moment I am still a heel impact runner myself.

I don't do and have never done anything pre-run other than maybe some calve and hamstring stretches and that is only before a race, because I usually have time to kill and nervous energy. In the end, it is a function of your body getting used to running again and you literally just have to run through it...it will go away on its own as you noted.

yeah those shoes are nuts, my buddy wears um and swears by them now. I'm a mid foot impact runner by nature so my heels are usually ok, its my arches that usually ache a little but thats nothing compared to shin splints.

I know when I'm not striding properly cuz my knees start hurting the second I get back home from my run.

are your arches flat or tall? I used to get arch pain and mine are fred flintstone status...the shoes I have provide much better arch support and it hasn't come back since

I hate running, i mean fucking haaatttte it. Lifting and a true stair master is all i can take. If I am stuck on a treadmill, I just crank the incline up and walk quickly so the muscle get a good work out.
