In the works of purchasing a fun option I've been wanting for a couple years now. It'll prove nearly useless till' I move to a more populated area, which will work great if my life plans go.. as planned next year.

Flushed and changed the oil, removed vanos check valves which I had never done before and they looked pretty well after a flush. However they did not click at all, it took a lot of thinner and degreaser to get them to audibly click and even then they would stick sometimes so that's getting replaced soon. Took out vanos solenoids too and cleaned and tested with a battery, both great.

Did you go through the wheel-well to access them? I've half-heartedly looked around for them, but never committed to finding and checking them.

I actually don't understand why everyone insists on going through the wheel well.

All I used was a cordless ratchet and a mirror and went through the side of the engine using a wobble extension. All you have to do is move out the way the 3 wire bundles in front of the check valves. Now, I have headers but I doubt the stock manifolds would influence much reaching them

That's good advice, thanks! I don't think of it when I have the wheel off, and don't want to go to that effort otherwise!

Reason guys go through the wheel is coming from the N54 turbo crowd. We got the Coolant tank, vacuum tanks and boost solenoids in the way.
Still doable from the top but you gotta move a few items to the side.

Btw when you said you did a oil flush what exactly did you do?

That makes sense, I'm sure it would make it impossible that way.

When I say I did a flush I just mean I ran the liquid moly engine flush for give or take 10 minutes before changing the oil. I had never ran one in the car before.

Gotcha. Whats the mileage on your engine and do you notice any changes after the flush?

I used the mothers oil flush.
80% sure it quiets down the valve train, 20% sure it’s just a placebo effect.

Yep, had promised myself I'd get a manual 335i one day. Couldn't settle with an auto "335xi". Besides, the SC kit is still tempting

Well there's your problem...

Our family just can't handle the responsibility of owning E91s.

Kid crashed his mom's wagon last November. Payback is a bitch as she crashed his!

Totaled with a bunch of subframe and spar damage. Probably could get it running again, but with 180k on it... donated :-(

And that nice new aluminum interior!!!

Getting by. Does suck, as I put some sweat equity into that car getting it built up. But high mileage, questionable GM transmission that was ending it's natural life span. A great first car for him, and he has the bug now! Probably won't replace with another E91, but there are a LOT of good E90s out there.

What's crazy bad timing, is that of the five vehicles we have for four drivers, only ONE is driveable right now!

1) GL450 - at $dealer$ for transmission speed sensor/conductor plate replacement - maybe done tomorrow?
2) 528i - broken down in driveway with who knows what's wrong
3) 330i - alternator went out last week, replacement coming in today (I hope)
4) 328i - see above
5) Mazda3 - lowly 2007 commuter still ticking. Needs CV shaft installed though (was going to be doing that this week)

Not a good week in the SR household!

Oof! FYI I was able to look into my F10 528i - it had the DME replaced under the federal emissions warranty right before it went out of coverage.
Unfortunately that seems like the cause of your issues there…

Thanks for that info. I'm suspecting DME as well. We keep putting it off as we know it's going to be $$$ and all these smaller problems in the others keep cropping up. Hopefully the 330i gets done tonight, GL tomorrow, Mazda next week, then we can focus on the big budget 528i repairs in October.

After all that, maybe slow our roll for a minute and start looking for a replacement for the e91.

Other than the 528i they're all the same age, although with vastly different mileage (between 115k to 220k). I guess that's what you get for having old cars!
