330D Lumpy Idle
Hi guys
Recently purchased a e90 (Pre-LCI) 330D, I love the car and its everything I'd hope it would be (pics coming soon) but I noticed this morning that I started the car from stone cold and after 10 seconds it went very lumpy for around 20 seconds and was fine again? I didn't notice any smoke the car would rev but was slightly laboured. I have no errors on the dash but I do need to get the car read to find the exact problem but am I looking at injectors/glow plugs or MAF maybe? It did seem strange that it started fine and then when lumpy? Thanks for any advice |

I changed the glow plugs on mine aswell as the controller which goes with them, mine wasn't showing any faults however when I read the codes it indicated that I had all 6 plugs off (normally indicating that the controller is broken) I replaced all six plugs and controller and much better. Whilst I was there I also resealed the swirl flaps and gave the manifold and EGR a clean. Long job but well worth the effort

My LCI does this on about 50% of cold starts. Haven't checked for errors but I do think it's the glow plug controller. It's about £120 IIRC and is reasonably easy to access on the N57, not sure about the M57 though. Apart from the rough feeling for about 20 seconds as you say, I get no other symptoms (except a total cut-out once but that was a one-off) so I'm not in a rush to get it sorted.
