Cobb E30 OTS map - why require downpipes?

Just curious, does anyone know what parameters in the Cobb E30 OTS map make it require aftermarket downpipes, versus say, a 1+? A related question is what are the map differences between the Cobb Stage 1+ and Stage 2+ maps? Has anyone looked at the differences with ATR?

More timing = more pressure in cylinder. Stock downpipes pose a restriction to evacuating exhaust gas and relieving that pressure.

The boost curve from STG2+ agg to E30 is almost identical. For the most part it's just more aggressive timing.

I saw your post over on BB and totally agree with Steve. If you just need to try a few adaptation pulls with stock downpipes, that's OK. Car won't explode but it's not something you'd want to do every day.

+1 dead on -
I heard on WOT even 1 deg of timing can make 40 - 50 HP difference, dont know the truth behind that but heard from a v reputable tuner

It depends. The notion that more advance = more power is an outright fallacy. If you are past MBT you are doing nothing but adding heat and pressure to the equation. That's doing nothing for power.

This is why tuning on the dyno can be so helpful. In a controlled environment you can see exactly what your motor wants. Every car behaves differently. But yea in theory you can pick up huge gains via timing advance, assuming you have the octane.

Good question! But....As the PTF tunes are locked we cannot necessarily compare the map parameters...not sure if PTF necessarily wants to disclose that anyway, what they create is their intellectual property...

PTF, it's not even close. Cobb does good work but an OTS map by definition is not tailored to your motor.
