I was driving home last night and about 5-6 mins after setting off I got this warning on the idrive



So I carried on but was driving rather gingerly, then about 2 mins late I got this warning



I looked at the dials and the oil temp was fine, had to stop and wait for the engine to cool so I could get home.



Luckily I don't need the car for work, so I will be phoning BMW assist when I get home and get them to recover it to the nearest dealer. Surely this will be covered under my AUC, I've only had the car 4 months.

Hi,
check the liquid cooling reservoir. I suspect that has dropped too low. You should have been alerted to that also but you never know.

Scary stuff. I've had an engine destroyed by overheating. Warped the block. Never recovered. I'd always stop immediately at the first sign of any overheating.

The fluid may have dropped too low to efficiently remove heat from the engine and radiate it at the radiator.

When I last checked my coolant it was way down! No warning had come on. The little stick was barely floating. Good place to start.

Mine went last month.

It flashed up coolant in amber and instantly went to red. I stopped immediately and gave the car time to cool.

Once I started it up there was no errors showing but the car was in limp mode and seconds later the coolant warning came on again.

You will be covered under warranty. Mine was covered under extended warranty.

I also found BMW Assist good too. Sorted everything out for me and give you a hire car to get past too.

There looked to be a bit if coolant leaking from the lid, I didn't open it just incase it was boiling over.

Did you have to pay for the hire car? As I go on holiday tomorrow and I don't need one and won't pay for a week while I'm away, but one would be useful if they want to give me one.

I know it's supposed to be pressurised. Maybe there's a release mechanism under pressure or it just leaked.

Just phoned BMW Emergency, the guy pretty much diagnosed it as water pump over the phone and they are coming to collect it :-(

Only had it 4 months and I've done about 1000 miles if that.
At least it's covered

Oh well. I'd be happy to have a common failure out the way early. It's not the end of the world.

What car have they given you to use? They just got me an Insignia from the local Enterprise depot.

Yes like Kerr said at least it's identified and should be an easy fix. Good thing it didn't happen in the middle of nowhere when you really needed it.

I told them I didn't need one. It would only be left sat in the carpark at home for a week while I'm on holiday. If they haven't fixed it by the time I get back then they said they will sort one out for me.

I wouldn't mind getting a few more common faults out of the way before my AUC runs out in March. Will save me paying an excess on the insured warranty

My car broke down on Saturday evening after the dealer had closed.

The car was collected and stored until Monday before being taken to the dealer. The dealer had the car ready by Tuesday afternoon.

It was dealt with very well.

They have stored mine until the morning.

The service has been very good. If I didn't have AA cover through the bank then I would pay for the BMW service when it runs out.

I'd probably say to renew your warranty once the AUC warranty is up.

If your mileage isn't too high by that point, it should be around £41 per month for the warranty with BMW assist.

It offers good peace of mind against any of the potential pitfalls.

I'm going to renew the warranty, that's why I'm trying to keep it below 60k.

But I won't be renewing the BMW Assist because I have AA cover through the bank. And it's on me not the car.
