BMS OCC - works
After 4 track events I checked my Oil Catch Can and it did it's job. Got about a table spoon of oil. Prior to the track events the can was empty with a light residue.
If you're driving hard and boosting more than stock I highly recommend an OCC.

no worries... I too questioned the effectiveness of the OCC but after this discovery I'm glad I have... driving around town and boosting now and then I didn't catch much oil.... but after some hard driving at the track it did it's job...

update as of today... 3 track events and 3K miles later, the OCC is still doing it's job...

out of curiosity, how many of you have the upgraded RB PCV and still have found significant amounts of oil in your OCC?

They have different purposes. Pcv valve - oil vapors going to the intake man. Occ collects the oil going to the inlet pipe. Rb pcv valve is better since it does not leak at boost that helps the crank case. guess its a lousy explanation

Just curious because apparently some have wound up with essentially no OCC accumulation after upgrading to RB PCV. I've installed the RB PCV but have still been considering a can

I did RB PCV and BMS OCC at the same time. No oil in the catch ever, other than a light film, but nothing to dump out.

I got rid of my oil catch can. I just get my valves cleaned. As for the oil blow by around the FMIC and chargepipe, it doesn't bother me. Glad to see its working though

On a side note, i have wondered if replacing the pcv hose 11157553949 has any benefits. Does this hose have a valve or is it just a hose?

I have heard stories of people having lots of oil and some with very little oil. The valve cover uses a cyclonic chamber to help prevent oil from escaping. You would think this would work well. I just rolled to 100k miles on my car so I replaced the valve cover as it needed a gasket anyway. I always had oil in my CP and I though it was mainly from the turbo seals. Two weeks after doing the valve cover, I put new HEXON RR550 turbos and TFT Inlet system on my car. The TFT has a vacuum line for the PCV which I hooked up to pull the crank case fumes back into the intake. The hose came loose and when hooking it back up noticed there was oil and not just a little... So I just ordered a BMS OCC and will be installing it this weekend. I highly doubt my turbos are leaking, but I have consumed a half quart of oil in the past 1000 miles. So it will be interesting to see how much oil I can catch...

On our 2010 535i with 29K miles and a JB4 we get almost no oil in the BMS OCC. I run map 5. On our 2007 335i with 80K miles and a JB4, catless downpipes and a CRX FMIC we get several table spoons every oil change.
I don't know if it's mileage, tune or just randomness in the N54 motors but there seems to be a wide range on what gets past the valve cover. |
