Dinan stage 2 vs stock N55: drag strip results
I've been to the drag strip 5 times while my car was stock. Here are the averages:
11/07/2014 (let the transmission shift itself in D and S modes) 60: 2.341 330: 6.258 660: 9.455 @ 77.515 1000: 12.206 1320: 14.518 @ 96.963 15/08/2014 60: 2.175 330: 5.990 660: 9.115 @ 79.585 1000: 11.811 1320: 14.096 @ 98.977 19/09/2014 60: 2.205 330: 6.003 660: 9.085 @ 80.240 1000: 11.741 1320: 14.000 @ 100.05 27/09/2014 60: 2.214 330: 5.986 660: 9.094 @ 79.50 1000: 11.801 1320: 14.082 @ 99.25 10/10/2014 60: 2.154 330: 5.923 660: 9.024 @ 80.32 1000: 11.707 1320: 13.974 @ 99.54 And here is the average of my runs with the Dinan Stage 2 installed. No other mods except for Alpina B3 flash 07/11/2014 60: 2.126 330: 5.728 660: 8.653 @ 84.95 1000: 11.165 1320: 13.272 @ 107.19 And here's my BEST run with the Dinan: 60: 2.035 330: 5.621 660: 8.538 @ 85.71 1000: 11.047 1320: 13.151 @ 107.45 This performed a LOT better than I expected. Especially given my crappy dyno pulls with the Dinan. Dinan: redeemed. No change in fuel, tires or launch method? I'm a little skeptical that 9 whp shaved a full second off your 1/4 mile but congrats either way!

Somebody sent me a PM and told me I needed to give the Dinan software more time to adapt. When I had it dynoed, I did it the day after the software was installed. I had driven 200+ miles after the installation and before the dyno. I thought it was enough.
Maybe it wasn't enough. I ran at the drag strip 1 week after the installation of the Dinan software. So maybe the software "adapted" and gave the gains Dinan claimed. And then some. It was about ~15 degrees cooler when I ran with the Dinan vs running stock, and on the dyno. My first run with the Dinan was the best: 13.151 @ 107.45 And even though the temperature continued to drop that evening, I was unable to eclipse that run. I launched ~2000 rpm and punched it. DTC was on, and it felt like I was hitting the rev limiter when the wheels were trying to break loose. I thought that killed my 60', but that run happened to be my 2nd best 60' of the night. The best was 2.035 and the first was 2.051 |

8mph in the 1/4 is definitely much more than 9whp. Not bad!

Here's a graph which you might find interesting. It compares horsepower to mph for my average of Dinan runs and my average of stock runs.
First, using the existing quarter mile data, I had to fit a curve to it. Once I fitted a curve, I calculated distance, velocity, RPM, and horsepower for each step. The step size was 0.001 s. To calculate horsepower, I just took the energy difference between the current point and the previous point, where E=1/2 m v^2, and divided by the step size. The power is actual power after drivetrain and wind resistant loses. This is why I plotted them against mph. Because at a given mph, wind resistant loses should be the same for both lines. So the difference between the two lines should be only due to the difference in engine power after drivetrain losses. Last edited by Mannix; 11-10-2014 at 01:14 PM.. |

I have had the Dinan Stage II on my 2011 e90 since it came out. While it may be on the high side of the tuner cost it is still a great tune for this car. Yes, it could be more aggressive but for my needs it is great. I will look at a different tune if I decide to change my turbo down the line though. I hear Dinan has been workin on the N55 and some news coming out next spring possibly.

So my best time 100% stock is:
60' 1.948 330 5.453 1/8 8.357 MPH 84.84 1000 10.853 1/4 12.963 @ 106.93 If I get the same HP gain that you had with a 60' of 2 sec or less I can run low 12s or high 11s @ 115-117 mph with just a DINAN stage 2 !!! lol. If that's the case I'll get a DINAN tune this weekend !! Is this possible? or I'm just dreaming!? |

Mine is DCT. I have tried every way possible to launch my car. All my runs were consistently from 12.9 to 13.2 @106 to 108. My best times were using launch control shifting around 6300-6500 rpm. Tires 18-20 PSI. I really don't know why is so fast! lol
