Wastegate needs to be replaced.
I've had a problem for a while now which has been very annoying. It's a buzzing sound with a freqency that correlates with engine RPM that can be heard the most during engine deceleration. It is most audible on deceleration from anywhere from redline to 1100 RPM.
I started a thread here: http://www.e90post.com/forums/showth...86#post1935786 and the consensus was that it seemed like some sort of exhaust issue (possibly a heat shield). Turns out we were wrong... Went to the dealer today, and they told me the problem is the wastegate on one of the turbos. They are waiting for a response from engineering on the east coast, and may or may not replace both wastegates (He said even a possibility of replacing the turbos... Sounds like overkill to me, but hey, free new turbos sounds great). Considering the fact that they are opening up the possibility to replace the entire turbo, I'm wondering if this issue is bigger than they are making it out to be. I guess we will see. Has anyone had this problem before? UPDATE: My car is having both turbos replaced at the dealer right now (wastegate is internal to the turbo, and they arn't sure which turbo is the culprit). Turns out there is an official bulletin on the issue. Last edited by MonacoTT; 01-11-2008 at 10:51 PM.. Reason: Typo |

I would say they most likely want to replace the entire turbo assembly not because of it being a bigger issue than they are letting on but, more so they can look at the entire assembly the way it came off the car and determine cause of failure.

It turns from a ticking into more of a buzzing at higher RPMs because of the high frequency. I would record a sound file, but my car is stuck at the dealer. I'll keep you guys posted. |

It's a known issue and there is a BMW bulletin to support it.

My A4 KO3 turbo developed this particular problem in 2nd year of ownership but dealer failed to dignosed it until after waranty was over. The wastegate develop "slops" and won't close completely, so you are can't get consistent as well as loosing boost. It's metalic rattling sound during deceleration is right on. Not sure if these Mitsubishi turbo has separate wastegate or integrated, if later then you are getting new turbo/s. Good luck. |

Great info guys! Man, I'm always blown away by the knowledgeability of the users on this forum.
If this problem is indeed causing a loss in boost, I wonder how much of a beast it will be once it's fixed (considering it's damn fast as is). How rampant of a problem is this? Is there some sort of redesign (ala HPFP) in effect, or in the works? |

I can't believe the things you say, first claiming an intercooler will melt your cats, now your telling people these are external wastegates. Did you really ever tune a turbo car? Or was that boost controller you said you used that almost blew your motor the extent of your tuning?

External huh... someone needs to learn the difference between a wastegate actuator and the wastegate itself.

Yea that's what I was thinking he might have meant, but I didn't want to give him the option to save face because, well, I'm a douch.
