Code p0401 on 2011 335d 55K miles

Hi everyone,

got this code today and from what i can tell its EGR - insufficient flow possibly due to carbon buildup.

What is the correct way to approach the dealer to make sure i get a correct and through clean out of the engine and not just a minimal clean to get the code cleared? anyone have a trustworthy dealership in long island, NY. anyone have experience with this code in particular?

thank in advance

did you get an actual CEL or scanned it and saw it?

if you clear it, does it come back?

my Serivice Engine Soon light came on and i read it with a ODB II reader i have at home.

I took it to a dealership and they said to leave the car with them and since i need a courtesy car i needed to bring it back sometime next week. I left the code in tact for now.

I have other symptoms too mainly lower gas mileage (now about 29MPG vs 32-33MPG a few months ago) and somewhat lower power/higher revs

Any update to this Archangel1? I got the same code with an SES light a few months ago. I haven't done anything since the light was only on for a day. Curious to hear what the fix was. Thanks

From this post, it seems like he is thinking it's carbon build up:

How many miles are on your car? From what I have seen, CBU seems to appear around 45-55k.

Im at 61k, knock on wood, no issues.

Planning on getting a walnut blast before I hit 62k just as preventative maintenance. Following that, an evolve tune.

hey just an update. The dealer changed the EGR valve about 3 weeks ago and i noticed improvement in my revs being lower for same style of driving. My MPG also weirdly decreased by about 1-2 mpg but i guess its been only 2 fill ups so far.

After about 3 weeks the SES light came on. My code reader couldn't identify the code this time. Got it back after 4 days stating they replaced the exhaust manifolds. My SA did not clarify with me what was the initial code and seemed to just be happy i was out the door. I had asked for call back regarding what the issues were and codes thrown. Plus at the end i was hit with a $50 deductible which SA never informed me about. Sorry but that is just not right on principle. It is a manufacture fault and if anything they should be paying me that for my trouble to bring it back to them.

Anyway i still think there is CBU but i have to see if its going to throw any codes in the future. i am basing this on the fact that i get 26 miles to the gallon in Long Island with mostly highway miles

In case i have any further issues anyone in long island recommend a good SA or dealership for people that care/know about their cars?

Funny you should post an update to this today, b/c my SES light came back on tonight for the P0401. Hopefully it'll stay on until I can bring it by the dealership.

Based on my experience with BMWUSA, the "correct way" would be like an episode of the Sopranos. Think two nickle plated revolvers, a pair of pliers and a straight razor.

BMW NA does not seem interested in working on this obvious problem.
