Does this CAN tool read BMW specific codes? Is it what people refer to as the BMW Coding cable? Does it work with the BMWhat App?

Works using your dashboard hazard lights to display/clear error codes. It doesn't require a phone to use. For the BMWhat app you'd need some sort of bluetooth device to send the data. I don't know if BMWhat app clears the "tuning" codes.

I've never really understood what people mean by BMW specific codes versus generic codes, but here is my take on it. Generic codes are those that can be read by any of the standard readers like you might buy at Pep Boys such as the ScanGauge II or the like. I have always assumed that when people in the forum describe codes using a format such as "p0471-Exhaust Pressure Sensor Range/Performance", that was a generic code. However, the CAN tool gives you a 4-digit code where the digits are from 0-15, and you need to convert that to hexadecimal. These "digits" come from the speedo when the MPH is reading as 0, 10, 20, 30, ... , 150.

With the hex-formatted 4-character code, with each character ranging from 0-F, then you look it up. For example, when I punched the beast a little too hard too soon with the JBD installed, I might get a code like "3-15-3-0" or 3F30. As I recall, that code referenced the rail pressure sensor. It has always given me what I needed, and I have always assumed these were BMW-specific codes. But then again, I suppose I could have it all wrong.

No. It is a rather simple device that has a single button that performs various operations depending on where you are in the so-called "menu tree" and how long you hold it down. There is not a true menu; I use that term to describe the implied existence of a menu; the CAN tool manual is needed to understand what I mean.

I think it's safe to say that the CAN Tool and BMWhat App are not related in any way.
