Downpipe with no tune
Sorry if this has already been covered but can you safely run a downpipe with no tune in our cars? Will it just result in a check engine light or are there limp mode/etc issues?
Thanks! |

You'll have the SES light on at all times but no limp modes. If you're looking for more power your best bet is to add a tuner like a JB4. DP's will add sound but without a tune you'll practically feel no power increase. I'll also add, the JB4 alone will make your car sound more aggressive. Especially with the CANflap option.

eurojulien can bench flash with JR and Renntech and delete EGR/SCR/DPF at the same time make sure you get the EGR plugs from IAKNOWN. Im currently at 374 whp and 474 wtq, there are others that have more gains than I have go for it . I haven't had any codes come when i deleted the alphabet soup

I did get a limp home message, but it says you may continue to drive the car. See this post:

The main reason you need a tune is to prevent a turbo over-speed and consequent over-boost. This was a big reason that the people with downpipes (which eliminate the DPF) ended up with the tuner they're with - one guy wouldn't sell dp's without a tune, as a customer-service thing.
Although a couple people have played around with it and concluded it's not guaranteed to happen, you don't want to torpedo a $25K motor. |

Ok how about install tune , then drive to shop for install.. Even though I have access to shop and car could stay indefinitely, I just hate to be a bother to the owner..

My main concern is about the post combustion injection cycle shooting considerable diesel onto all the sensors downstream of the DPF or the car going into limp mode from not having an operable DPF. Sounds like neither will be the case, just many fault codes and perhaps less power. Last edited by eurojulien; 02-28-2015 at 12:16 AM.. |

IIRC, this was discussed (in another thread) and the consensus was that it was ok. Beware, however, that not every shop, even many shops that do tuning on gas cars, do not have the capability to break the encryption on the DDE and to flash it. It requires special knowledge and capabilities. For instance, many people are removing the DDE and FedEx'ing it to their tuner.
