It would be interesting to hear how they wash it and take care of it.

I think there was some article about new paint techniques in the last BMW Magazine. BMW is working on something like this but they were not sure how people would adapt to the non-glossy look. Its in our blood to wax our cars to make them look shiny. So the concept hasn't gone into production yet.

Hey, I like it! It's different. Kinda of like stealth bomber black paint.

It'll be interesting if someone uses non-stick pan telfon paint on their BMWs... imagine if you park it under the hot sun, you could fry an egg on the hood surface??

"Hot Rod Black"; someone over at the Porsche board did this with a 911 SC *because* he had a car with recycled body panels in different colors. I do like the look. If I had a 911 SC with different-colored body panels, I'd certainly consider this, particularly on a track car. It probably wouldn't kill you when it came time to sell on a 25+ year old sports car. On a 2008 328i station wagon? I don't think so!

I would think that it will get scratched easily too.

Yeah definitely looks stealth. I think it looks pretty good, but I would never want to own one like that.

One of the cars we have at my work is painted flat black. It looks sooo sick; but yeah, it's a pain to keep clean, since it shows finger prints so easily. Plus I can't get past the feel of it. Not slick like a normal paint job. Running your hand across it feels like a chalkboard.

And yeah, you clean it with Windex and a MF towel.

I personally love the flat black look. Have for many years. Sort of upset it's become such a popular trend though.

A lot of the flat blacks you see are wraps. I believe that M5 to be one as well. Wraps can get quite expensive. Still cheaper than paint though. A quality paint job that is.

For our 3ers though, probably get a quality wrap for <$5K.

On show cars I have always liked the matte black look, but that must be a PITA to take care of when it comes to scratches and rock chips.

My friend is a painter/body guy and I asked him about flat blacks years ago. He said it's not just a base coat. There is a method of spraying "clear coat" on the paint to achieve the flat look. I quoted clear coat because I don't believe it's an actual clear, it's more a matte clear sealant to protect the paint.

It was such a long time ago I don't remember his exact response, but I will ask him when I talk to him soon.
