It's pretty darned easy to do yourself if you have the (24mm?) socket to get the filter off. You can even get a Mityvac and suck the oil out, otherwise ground clearance means you need ramps or a jack.

I've paid $125 at my indy, which is the limit I'll pay before DIY time. |

If you put in 7 quarts the low oil light should come on immediately. The capacity is 8 quarts or 7.5L according to BMW. $176 for parts is definitely absurd though. And charging $6.00 for hazardous waste, thats offensive. Melonhead you should send them a link to this thread once it runs its course Last edited by Hoooper; 04-24-2015 at 11:16 AM.. |

With the BMW club membership, my dealer charges $7 a quart for the oil. Figure eight quarts, and $20 for a filter on amazon, and that's $76 in parts. Maybe it's $7.50 a quart, I forget.

It's more expensive bc they drain the exhaust fluid, which they clearly don't do on the 335i's. Absent that, an oil change for the d is about 150. Very similar to what the indy shops priced me at.

They used to drain the DEF prior refill. They do not do this anymore. The official procedure is only to fill DEF.

Right, so they can charge you $2000 later in replacing the DEF tank when it goes bust due to crystalization of the urea mixture.
I saw the SIB where it said they should no longer drain the tank prior to fill up. |

Mityvac
I do my other oil changes with a Mityvac, easy as pie. I even did one on my e46 wearing a white shirt and tie to make a point to my buddy.
Ad for the DEF clogging, it seems there should be a DIY for draining and flushing. It also seems that the tank can be cleaned if removed. Hot water should do it. |

To avoid clogging and damage, the tank should not be overfilled with DEF.
Here is the text from BMW SI B16 02 10 : "Do not overfill the SCR system. Filling the tanks up to the top of their respective filler necks will cause the DEF to leak out of the tank's vent system, and will possibly damage the tanks and internal components." Filling the DEF tank until overflow at the filling port is overfilling. For this reason, I only add 2.5 gallons at a time when changing the oil and when I get the message that the DEF is low, i.e. the 1000 miles countdown. |

I have started adding only 2.5 gallons when the warning comes on also and the intermittent level sensor code now seems to be gone. I would guess enough def has splashed around to clean off some crystallization that was causing problems. I drive a lot of miles and i don't feel like i ever fill the def so i don't see the need to top it off just to go further on each fill.
