Can you pick up a car in Germany that you purchased in the U.S.

I might be moving back to London before the end of the year and would really like a car when I live there this time.....I'm thinking M3. I was just wondering if you order a car from a U.S. dealer, could you pick it up in Germany from the factory?

Wouldn't it be better to buy it in the US and drive it for 6mths before exporting it? I think it won't have import duty and VAT on the car as long as you don't sell it within 1 yr.

I'll have to do more research on the subject, but I just wanted to see if it was possible first to order here and pick up there. I know in the UK, as long as I don't sell the car within a year of moving there, then I won't have to pay any taxes on the car. Not sure what the threshold for ownership is before moving there though. I think even if I had to pay some EU duty and taxes that it might be cheaper than buying one in the UK. When you consider the exchange rate, the M3 I would want would run about $110,000

I'm sure you have to have owned it 6mths beforehand. If you do euro delivery don't you have to pay a extra 16% if its not exported by 6mths?

If thats true then, then I may order it to the states. But even with 16% tax, that would be much cheaper than buying a car in British Pounds.

I'm not sure if the 16% by BMW is all. There may also be the 17.5%VAT and 10%import duty to UK customs.

To register it you'll need to take the ESVA test which could be complicated.

Thanks man, so basically I can pick up a car in Germany but its not gonna be that much of a savings after all the taxes and everything. I'll do some more research and figure out exact numbers before I make my decision. Thanks all

The link gives some info. I'm not sure on imports from the US so can't help too much. As mentioned I'm pretty sure you won't have to pay the VAT if you owned it for more than 6mths before importing it to the UK.

Also remember you may have more trouble driving a LHD car int he Uk with all the tolls, ticket machines etc. You'll also have trouble overtaking.

Hopefully you'd be able to do it without much trouble and save on the money. Could go towards the £400 road tax per year.

Yeah, I've lived in London already and the driving I would be doing wouldn't involve many tolls or anything like that. If I did plan on taking a trip where tolls were involved, I would certainly have someone with me for the UK roadtrips. Also, I plan on taking the car on the Eurostar for roadtrips through all the LHD countries.....thats probably when I'll be doing most of my overtaking

Thats all good then. The only tolls would be tunnel, M6 toll and some bridges. The european roadtrips would defo be easier. It's a pain to overtake in a RHD car.

Just looked and seems you'd only need a SVA if its a personal import. It shouldn't be too hard I guess.
