Auto Dip
Anyone have any experience using Auto dip? It's this new product that came out last month that's similar to Plastidip except it is latex not rubber. The website uses a M3 to showcase their work. I ordered 2 cans and plan on redoing my window trim as it is Plastidipped right now and is beginning to peel a little bit. Apparently this stuff will adhere better that plastidip and it also comes out looking glossy.
Here is their website: http://www.autodip.com/ I'll be sure to post pics/a review once I do my window trim for those who might be interested.

Keen on the review as well. Where did you purchase it? Everything on their site says out of stock.

Yeah I ordered gloss black. I ordered 2 cans although I have a feeling like one was enough for both sides. They just came in; I plan on attacking the project Saturday morning. I'll need to remove the plastidip that's on there now, and will definitely be very thorough in doing so because I want this stuff to stick really well. I've looked up some more info on it and if I do everything right the results should be great.

I plasti-dipped my side mirrors and kidney grills and though I like the matte black look, I think I'm ready for a change and make them glossy black. Will be checking back to see your results. Good luck! PS - I've read that Goo Gone can help get rid of those stubborn Plastidipped areas. Last edited by dj_aj; 08-13-2015 at 09:46 PM.. |

Well I attempted to re do the trim today and to my dismay, this auto dip stuff is not as good as plastidip. Followed the instructions on the can and website and when I peeled off the tape it kept peeling off the autodip. I tried again on both sides and the same thing happened again so I'm just running the stock silver trim. I think the auto dip is more fragile over plastidip. If I had let it stay on the car with the couple minor imperfections I got when removing the tape, the auto dip would of came right off after the first wash.
At this point I'm just going to get the gloss black trim from ECS tuning. It isn't worth the hassle imo. I pretty much spent all day doing nothing and $60 down the drain. I don't think I did anything wrong either, I do have some experience with painting things and plastidip so this wasn't my first run or anything. Maybe someone else will have some luck, but it just isn't for me. I will say this, the autodip does look better than plastidip and I was really excited when I finished before I peeled off the tape, but plastidip is more durable no doubt. |

Sorry to hear what happened OP. Perhaps you could contact the people at the autodip website and see what they have to say about your experience? It's very unfortunate that it didn't work out for you...

I think I might contact them. I also think this would of worked out better if I removed the trim, but from my understanding it isn't the easiest thing to do, and at that point I'd just replace it with a gloss black trim ordered from a vendor. For now I'm just keeping the silver, it honestly hasn't bothered me too much.

I'm curious about this stuff myself. I may give it a try one of these days. To the OP, order some shadow line vinyl wrap for your trim. I did y e93 in about 3 hours and it came out great! Your e92 should be easier to do.

Sorry about it not turning out what you expected it to be.
I'm also curious to know, how many coats did you do and do you think that adding more coats could've made it hold/last longer? Also, did the finish look like black glossy vinyl or was it still a bit matte like plastidip? Thanks for trying this stuff out and providing feedback. |

The finish wasn't super glossy, but it definitely wasn't matte. It didn't have that rhino liner look that plastidip puts out, it was pretty smooth and wasn't as rough as plastidip.

I applied the wrap with the trim on the car. I dont see a need to remove it. just be carful when your trimming the material with your razor knife. You dont want to knick the paint.

Shadowline trim was awful, at least the glossy version. I went with Arlon vinyl from Don Nguyen on the forums with much better results, especially due to the E92 one-piece curve. Just run painters tape along your paint right next to the window trim before doing anything to help protect.

Don't mean to thread jack, but I found some glossy rubber-spray you may be interested in. It's called customwrap. It's made by duplicolor and they have it at autozone. It works very well; although if applied over Plastidip it will melt the plastidip.
It's super glossy (clear coat over whatever matte color coat) and peels off just like Plastidip. It's on my grille here, but that was sprayed over a rough layer of black so it has texture. I've just been too busy to redo it all. |

Okay so that last picture I didn't realize would be so blurry, here's the customwrap on my test panel - a 12-pack soda box. You can actually see the product on the stand behind it. You can also see where I peeled some at the bottom right of the image

This looks interesting as well. I just wrapped my interior trim in 3m 1080 gloss black and have been thinking about putting a clear coat over to give it some depth. This might do the trick without worring about permenantly f'ing up my trim!
