N47D20, sticky wastegate actuator?
Hi guys, I wanted to pick your brains about a problem i'm having with my engine and it's lack of power 1 in every 15 journeys or so, it's very random so hard to approximate.
I've narrowed it down to the turbo wastegate actuator, I believe it is sticking open and not allowing the turbo to do it's job. If I stop the car after a journey, leave it for 15 or so mins, then drive off, it seems to sore itself out. I've had this issue for a while now and not thought too much of it, I took it on a 12 hour round trip and the issue dissapeared for about a month, but now it's back. So i'm looking for a bit of advice from an actual mechanic or someone who has suffered this issue before, i'm dangerous with a set of tools since i've worked with helicopters in a previous life, and i'm hoping it's something I can do myself. Check out the video below for the noises i'm getting. I assume the loud ticking is just the actuator testing it's limits, but the loud buzz and the rapid quiet ticking at the end is what i'm concerned about. Cheers. |

I've seen a few of these,do you have any fault codes? The usual one is 'electric charging actuator plausibility' or similar. If faulty unfortunately it's an entire turbo replacement.

If it turns out to be an actuator and this can be proven then there are several routes you can take
Firstly http://www.ecutesting.com/catalogue/...4069&model=465 ECU Testing have been carrying out repairs on these for a while not too sure re success rate but its a damn sight cheaper than a new unit. Company's like TurboTechnics and TurboDynamics will also be able to assist if this proves to be the case, the other alternative of course is an exchange unit from somewhere like Euro's/GSF or one of the many turbo refurbishment company's out there. downside of having the actuator refurbished is losing the car for a number of days while the units being sorted, though financially you'll be better off, however word to the wise these cars have history of turbo issues therefore plan ahead look at the maths as you could go through this only to find the turbo itself may have early signs of crying enough so worth while perhaps having the whole unit looked at to check for end float and other wear issues if this is the case might be worth getting the whole unit, though more costly today sorted if you follow me |
