335d smoke issue
Hi Everyone,
Purchased my 335d a month ago, noticed that its smoking really bad on idle and whilst driving around (town/motorway). Had the oil and filters changed, engine flushed with Wurths. Although the car runs smoother as expected, the smoke issue still remains. The smoke is white on appearance and has a distinctive smell to it. From what I have been told, the DPF on mine has been removed, but from videos I've seen online on other 335d DPF deleted, the smoke is visible under heavy load as expected but not on idle. I'm not sure if mine has a modified exhaust, but it does have a deep bellow sound lower end. I also don't know if the car has been re-mapped but it is very quick (i've not driven another one to compare, and there's no paperwork to prove that it's been mapped so it might just be me!) Any pointers on what the issue could be? It's a bit of an issue for pedestrians and drivers as I'm aware the fumes can be smelt in cars behind me and in general surroundings :-( I've attached a vid to my droplink. https://www.dropbox.com/s/9m4olex9rp...O0057.mp4?dl=0 https://www.dropbox.com/s/n3f33x90km...O0052.mp4?dl=0 Thanks in advance, Habib Last edited by HM335d; 08-13-2015 at 01:26 PM.. That has nothing to do with the DPF, my 330d's been gutted & remapped and doesn't smoke at idle, very little comes out of the back TBH
The smell, is it like oil or diesel? It could be burning oil due to a blocked breather, knackered turbo, worn engine, etc, or it could be unburnt diesel from over fuelling due to a leaking injector, does it start ok both hot & cold? |

Smoking at idle like that I'd agree with Rich is more deep routed 335d's aren't to my knowledge as prone to turbo failure as the 330d but it's not unheard of either, I'd also look at the breather and it's worth having a nose St the intercooler pipe on the drivers side from turbos to intercooler for signs if oil blobby and saturation which is common as oil maywell be being pushed through the inlet |

Did you find out the cause of this mate?
I think i have the same problem now, it smokes white/bluish smoke at idle with a very strong fuel smell especially when cold. But if I apply the right foot obviously when warm there's no smoke, kinda like it just needs a clear out? But I have noticed when cold if I'm going slow or just slightly resting my foot on the accelerator the smoke gets worse and you can feel it choking up a bit and I can see the ramp needle slightly bouncing. I've only just serviced it myself less than 2k ago, fuel filter, oil filter and oil. (K&N panel filter) No dpf, egr bypassed and straight through exhaust. No intercooler pipe leaking due to upgrade to forge boost pipe. Any ideas??? I know blue smoke is a sign of turboa going but it's not that blue and it's not constant so I don't think it could be the turbos. Last edited by tomwh85; 09-29-2015 at 03:38 PM.. |

Oil can burn blue or white depending where it gets into the system.
It could be the turbo, it could be the breather system or a bad injector. Having said that, my brothers 320d smokes at idle pretty similarly to the first video, even with a new turbo, new breather and new injectors. His engine has done 205k though, so its presumably just a bit worn. |

I had this issue on my 330d. I had a dpf down pipe fitted. Egr delete and bypass pipe. Remap. I was told it is the crankcase breather which is located near back of engine. I sold my car before i got round to doing it. Hope this helps.
On the other side I was told by other mechanics this smoke is normal as there is no dpf. |

Maybe it needs a good Italian tune up?

A hoon around when it's hot and sitting on the motorway in a lower gear.
Helps to burn out all the shit that collects through town driving. My old 328i kept failing the MOT on emissions, a blast up the motorway in 4th and few hard accelerations (up to redline) cleared it up and made it pass lower then the previous few years.

Hi everyone, first of all sorry for the lack of response, I was on leave and had a few bits and bob's to attend to whilst away.
The good news is, my car seems to be sorted- I got it checked out and there was no issues with leaks or hardware, but was advised that I should take the car for re-mapping again to see if it would sort the smoke out. It looks like the car was mapped and the software wasn't good on the car, so a remap and terraclean later sorted the issue. Hopefully this solution will help anyone else. Again, thanks for all the replies and I will continue to monitor it to see if it happens later on down the line. |

Here's a video of it now- huge difference. The car has the DPF removed hence the black exhaust tips. I was also told that it could have been the turbo actuator or a weak injector. Thankfully it wasn't either of these.

Glad you got it sorted can I ask a question guys, I've just had a new turbo, breather fitted also oil and filter change. At idle get no smoke what so ever and under normal driving no smoke either but if say I'm in 2nd gear coming off a roundabout and put my foot on the floor there is definetly smoke(not black or blue, the best I can describe it is grey) it doesn't last long. Is this normal??? Forgive me if this is a daft question as this is my first diesel car

Hi Jimmy, I would say a little smoke when you put your foot down is quite normal, but it would also depend on your setup. I do get a bit of smoke when I put my foot down, but that's probably down to no DPF and a remap. I'm sure one of our experienced members may be able to shed more light on your issue :-)

Mine has the same issues, only have one fault code for fuel filter. Changed glow plugs, glow relay, ccv and main thermostat today. Checked intercooler, tiny amount of oil to the touch, but not wet. INPA injector values look fine, but the maf is all over the place and jumps around lots. I’ve put some stop smoke inside the oil to see if that helps. The car drives well and pulls like a train. There is some black smoke when in hard acceleration. |

yeh,,disconnect the maf sensor,,then drive it,,if it drives fine then the maf is at fault,,the car will relearn original settings when its disconnected.
