Smile Back 2 School 2015/2016!!!

So today was the first day for my little ones return to school from a Summer that went like a blur. In fact, this entire year of 2015 has flown by way too fast!
I know a few of you have lil ones too. How was their first day? Pics...?

My Junior doesn't return until 9/2.

Trying to council some co-workers, because the husband didn't wait an extra 20 minutes for wife to get out of shower so she could take first day pictures. Kids are 14, 12, and 10. What Ever. . .

Those of you who have Elementary aged kiddos, have you noticed the degree of difficulty they expect even 2nd graders to do? I mean I'm all for "higher education and learning" but dayumn! Can the lil kids enjoy Crayons and Finger Painting before jumping into sentence structures and multiplication?

I totally agree. Our school system is not as aggressive as some foreign education standard, but I am all for kid's enjoy their childhood.

Totally and has probably gone too far. "Common core" curriculum is based on what academics and business leaders have deemed as critical skills by the time college graduates enter the workforce. So they worked backward, stating that by senior in college you need to know XXX and they work their way all the way down each grade level on critical skills to master into high school, middle school, and elementary school so that by 1st or 2nd grade the kids are required to know basic algebra and equations if they are to continue the "proper" progression. Seems crazy to me as some of these math problems are almost unintelligible to adults!

I remember my elementary school days roughly 30 years ago doing finger painting, glue houses and stuff. Now my son brings home questions such as, "if John has 6 pens, 2 pencils and 1 calculator, how many pancakes can Jill fit on her roof"?

Well, 40 years ago in elementary school, we already KNEW Jill wouldn't have any 'cakes on the roof, she wasn't allowed out of the kitchen. It's a trick question, boy.

This is probably not the right place for this discussion... but one of the reasons that both this country and the rest of the world has gone down hill is because too many people have gotten educated. It has simply diluted opportunities everywhere... sadly this may be one of the ways help curb this problem in the future.

Sadly, starting out as a mail room clerk to CEO is long gone. Having only a 4 yr degree is like having a GED in today's world.

Depends on the degree and what you do with it. A 4 year IT degree will get you a 6 figure starting position, with stock options, at Uber. A Junior year intern will get $7,995/month (plus housing) at Amazon.

I almost feel like education no longer matters... or there is a new wave of civilization development coming.

If you think that this market wont be massively over saturated soon, I have bad news for you. Out of all of my friends, 80% went in that direction... I said the same about law school 10 years ago and here we are.

I wouldn't disagree with you and nothing I said would assume otherwise. I was putting a positive spin on F30's remark..."Having only a 4 yr degree is like having a GED in today's world."

How can you argue with that, when community colleges are offering 4 year degrees now.

Let's NOT lose focus on the purpose of the OP guys.

Sure I made a simple comment re: homework and general curriculum these days, but I wanted to see and hear about your little ones pics or first day/first week experiences.
For the record... A 4yr degree these days is and does NOT equate to as much as it should. Honestly, College is more of a "business & revenue and money pit" than anything IMO. But if someone would like to start a discussion/thread on the subject, I'll participate.

Now back to the kiddos.

More like the direction was lost and a whole new destination was input.

I saw a funny one on FB this morning. Yesterday's first day kid was all smiles and dressed nice. Today lunchbox was smashed, hair in the wind, and smile turned upside down. Seems getting up to be at school bus stop at oh-six hundred something is tough on 4th graders. . .
