hey guys im thinking to trade my current vehicle (07 e90 335i) to 2011 x5 35d.
My question is....how reliable is M57 (assuming x5 35d has m57) comparted to 35i? like waterpump, injector fail, etc? any feedbacks will help thanks!

Emissions system is temperamental...remove it if you live some place without stringent smog regs. Otherwise make mods that will prevent carbon buildup due to the EGR. Beyond that the engine is pretty damn bullet proof. Really a unique and fantastic car.

My transmission died but that is an outlier. Few on this board have replaced their tranny. The DEF tank going bad happened to me and almost every other person that posts here. Vacuum lines and oil return lines also seem to be a weak spot. I had my glow plugs replaced as well. I am very glad I had a CPO warranty until I blocked my EGR. Lots of folks have had to deal with carbon build up due to the lousy design of the EGR.

Make sure you have the dealer update all the software.

I thought the x5 didn't suffer from carbon build-up because of their different EGR systems. Op, to answer your question: No these cars are not reliable compared to let's say a toyota. Compared to another BMW they are more reliable than a 745i but less reliable than a 328i.

X5 is much slower to get CBU but not immune.

I have had 3 BMW's and they are very reliable when maintained properly. Precision instruments however, require more maintenance than say a rebadged Camry platform with leather (Lexus). The M57 is a great engine and available in engaging and fun to drive platforms. The water pump and thermostat are good old mechanical designs rather than electronic.There are many people on this forum achieving ridiculous amounts of power from this engine with no issues. The EPA and related equipment is the killjoy, (as always).

Almost bought an 08 760li though. That wouldn't have been cheap to maintain.
