Hi,

Just wondering what people would do?

Ive got a twin turbo 35d. Small turbo is shot apparently the BMW specialist says its at. Hes taken it off and apparently its nearly in 2 pieces!

BMW quote around £800 but recon are around £350 with warranty.

Any good recommendation for recon places? Are the recons just as good as OEM new?

I would just take it to a specialist turbo place and they'll rebuild it and supply a 12 month warranty. For the cost saving I'd just get a recon.

We have Turbo Technics here in Northampton, I'm sure you'll find a turbo specialist near you.

Just get a recon one.

There's no reason why a reconditioned one won't be as good as a new one. It may even be better as it will have been built more carefully than a mass produced OEM one.

garage has said mine is nearly in 2 pieces so id rather buy one off the shelf and if i get exchange money for mine then ill take it!

well i think BMW's turbos that they supply for parts are reconned as they offer money back for your broken turbo and garage confirmed that aswell

How hard is it to remove and replace the turbo on the diesel engine? Just wondering as i'm having conversations around a refurbed set of twins for my N54. The refurb place warranty covers the turbos, but not the removal and refit.
At least a new BMW turbo would mean that they'd cover the removal and replacement if it failed again.

I purchased and re-con turbo for my 120D and it came with a certificate and 2 years warranty / 80K warranty.

Good luck finding a non recon. Most turbos are recon these days.

A lot of turbo's are going re con keeps the cost down plus its a competitive market out there these days, VFM the re con route works thing is do you take the gamble or not I dare say depends who's done the job, what assurance you get with the product in terms of warranty as well as support.

Tough call on price v security. Some places are well known, I've dealt with TurboTechnics a good few time and they are well known Essex Turbo's never dealt with them personally but have had customers obtain turbo's via them TBH no issues I can think off can come to light.
