Help with Transfer Case Output Shaft Seal Replacement
Hello, need some guidance/help.
I have a leak from the rear output shaft of my transfer case. I am in the process of changing the seal but I can figure out how to get the rear output shaft off in order to get to the seal behind it. I was following the Pelican Parts DIY but ran into a problem - http://www.pelicanparts.com/BMW/tech...ments_Bookmark Unfortunately, my rear output shaft does not have a 30mm nut (see fiure 8 from link above) for me to remove in order to pull the output shaft. Mine has a clip but I am not sure what I need to do in order to be able to pull the output shaft and get to the seal behind it. Here is an realoem image of the parts, I want to pull part #4 in order to replace seal (part #3) here are some photos of my output shaft, you can see the clip. do i need to pull the clip first, then pull the shaft out? or just pull the shaft out? how would i remove the clip?

so I took the c-clip off, and then shaft just pulls off. looks like my leak is coming from part #5 (the o-ring) and not part #3. is it normal to have oil on the threads of the output shaft?

anyone know the dimensions of the o ring (part #5 in the diagram?)
I found a 30m (interior diameter) x 36m (outer diameter) x 3m (width) at advance auto. it does not fit, but is very close. is it 31mm (interior diameter) x 2.5mm (width) (realoem says 31x2,5)? whats the outer diameter? found here- https://www.ecstuning.com/b-genuine-...g/27107537631/

will this work!? ECS and Turner want $10-13 for just the o-ring. I have amazon prime and can get a bunch of them, faster, and for less

I would call local BMW dealers. For small things like o-rings or nuts and bolts they are cheaper vs online due to no shipment and handling fee. Plus if they have it in stock it is just a drive away (if you have means of a ride).

This is what is good here, you asked question, but at the same time you shared your problem with others who can run into it later on. And they will know, including myself, to have that o-ring ready when fixing a leak there.
I bet mine being '06 if not leaking already, will soon leak. |

Does anyone know how to get the front output shaft removed? It's assembly #8 in the diagram. I can't see/identify the snap ring (#10), and the assembly doesn't seem to want to slide off.
I'm beginning to think I need to pull the whole transfer case and open it up. I'd appreciate it if someone could tell me I'm wrong and what I'm missing. Thanks! Edit: a-HA! Found this: https://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1141363 It *does* just pull out. Edit 2: After all this, the replacement seal I ordered is too big, by about 1/8" diameter. I'm guessing this is karma from ordering the $10 part instead of the $30 genuine BMW one. So, to the rest of you, don't buy this: https://www.ecstuning.com/b-corteco-...107546667~cor/ Last edited by downshiftdata; 11-03-2018 at 07:42 PM.. |
