7 months ago I plasti dipped my kidney grills. Turned out great for a month or so, then started to fade and look a dirty matte color. Without wanting to cough up $90 for OEM black grills, I decided to apply 2 layers of plasti dip on top of old dip, 3 coats of base (gloss black) 2 coats of clear. Looks awesome now.

My reasoning for this was more experimental. Normally would have applied primer under a base coat, but was curious to see down the road how it would hold up and most of all, if its possible to peal away the paint attached to the dip.

Its just dip on dip. As long as you cleaned it thoroughly before painting over it I dont see a problem.

I think he painted more plasti dip as well as a couple of layers of actual paint and clear. If so it does work I have just heard that its a pain to remove cause it won't peel but will instead come off in chips.

Oh. That's just weird then. Do you have that plastidip texture showing in the paint?

Weird yes. Did it work? So far so good. It looks and feels like paint with clear. I can post a picture tomorrow so you guys can check it out.

Side note, I discovered that Black Magic Tire Shine works extremely well in removing stubborn plasti dip. Especially if the dip is old and dried out.

Really? I always used tire shine to on plasti dip to bring back the dark black look when it got faded haha
I always used goo-gone or whatever its called to remove dip.

Tire shine is supposed to break it down over time. I use it to shine up my dipped wheels anyway though. Lol.

Definitely will shine it up! But run your finger nail across it after some tire shine and it'll come right off. Goo-Gone works great too!

I removed the plasti dip off my wheels just the other day. Out here in Oregon we use red cinder rock instead of salt on icy roads. The red rocks embeds itself into the dip leaving a nasty red stain. Plasti dip looks amazing at first, but slowly faded, which I'll be blaming natures elements for that.

If I can find the balls to do, I'd like to dip the wheels again 4 maybe 5 coats, then 2-3 coats of wheel paint and clear. In case I ever decide to remove it again.

I use tire-shine on my plastidipped parts for 1-2 years without issues.

Over time the plastidip does fade which is why I use tire-shine on it. Not sure if the tire shine is the cause of a fading.
