New 1/8 best

Our local track opened for a test and tune yesterday. The track sucked, no one was able to hook on street tires, even the all wheel drive guys were complaining. The weather was overcast and cool, but still ran my best time.

If I can get this thing to hook a little bit, it should be easily in the 7s. 60ft times are killing me. I know this is not a drag car, but it is still fun to go out and play. Need to pick up some 245 drag radials or something.

Only thing done to the car since I had in at BPC was up my meth nozzle up to a 1000cc.

Very nice, car should pick up about 25mph in the back 1/2, so yea like Bob said, should be good for a low 12, high 11sec pass. I'm itching to get to the track, atco is 4hrs away and is open March 15th for their first test n tune. Once I put my cooler on I'll probably take a ride out. Even though Lebanon valley Dragway is 20 min away but not open till April 15th.

What gear are you launching in ?

Launching in 2nd, but couldn't come up on the converter at all. Had to baby the throttle until I was way out of the hole. Any thing else and she would just start sliding sideways.

There is a 1/4 mile track a couple of hours away. Plan to give it a shot this summer.

Bob, huge increase smoke since the nozzle update.

Yup I got a set of 245/45/17 nitto drag radials going on it once the weather clears up, if you launched it first your mph would be a little higher too. Regardless, these cars need a tire behind them that's for sure

Nice job! And yes, the launch is tricky with the kind of wheel torque available. Even with drag slicks. Carl B somehow managed a 1.79 60 ft, which I haven't been able to achieve.

http://www.dragtimes.com/BMW--335d-Drag-Racing.html

And based on results at the above site, I think to crack into the 11's on the 1/4, you'll need < 7.8 sec at > 92 mph in the 1/8 th mile.

2 more months until the strips open around these parts...

Track prep is crucial and not all tracks/ crews are the same regardless of the track's sanctioning body. My local track is pretty good.

Englishtown is closer, and it's open March 13th (Sunday). I'm most likely going to go. There's an import vs domestic event going on.

Maybe we can meet up at Atco (my local track ) sometime this spring. I need to get some drag radials though....

Currently slicks are Hoosier DOT drag radials in 225/45R-17. I've tried a wider size, but it's also a taller tire, which was optimum for trap speeds of ~112-113 mph as it kept the vehicle from shifting into 5th and saving some time. But since having enough power to get into the 11's the car needs to shift into 5th before crossing the line, and the smaller diameter tire helps a bit on the back end due to better gearing. But I'd actually like an even smaller diameter drag slick, but the 17 inch rim limits what's available ...

I know you launch it in 2nd, Do you just let the car shift itself in sport or do you short shift it? If so, what rpm have you figured out to work the best? 43-4500~ish ?

For my car it seems to work better to carefully launch in 2nd (1st is a sideways clown show, even with slicks, and 2nd isn't much better), short shift into 3rd with the paddles before the car chooses to shift, and then let it shift itself for the 3/4 and 4/5 transitions. The short shift for 2/3 seems to work better due to the transmission being in viscous coupling mode for 2nd, which has more drivetrain loss. I had posted some Gtech data on this several years ago for my car, but your car may be different ...

I can't remember the speed I shift from 2nd (will depend on your tire diameter), but it was such that I get into 3rd gear, with a locked transmission, at about 3400-3500 rpm.

I'm hopeful we'll be seeing some more 335d's getting into the 11's this year. I'm eagerly awaiting the results of the hybrid turbo guys.

Good to hear. So I'm assuming the short shift is about 4k or so. I'll play around with it. Thanks!

I think your right about the 11sec d's.. It's funny how quick this market exploded within the past year

What tires are you running? Old? Did you get them hot enough? Track prep OK?

There are quite a few drag radials that will cut a 1.3-1.6 60ft with IRS and coming out way harder than we can with our car.

Honestly, my P-zero run flats have plenty of traction when warm. I can't imagine a nice set of drag radials breaking free on a prepped track... especially in 2nd.
