I get instagram, Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest...but what exactly is the purpose of Snapchat?

Since I can't see it without making an account which I refuse, I don't really understand why it exists with the other apps available.

Is it because the video is gone within a certain period of time and only your follows can see it for that short time? What seems dumb is that I'm sure someone can capture the video you posted and then it exists forever anyway.

Not seeing the purpose of it. Yes, I'm getting old.

Good for talking to chicks without getting phone numbers. Only reason I use it. Makes Tinder a breeze.

I use it to take funny pics with my kids. I think the app itself is really clunky and not very intuitive.

Instagram is great though. I barely use facebook at all at this point.

ig now has snap features and is way easier to use... it also provides a much easier follower base

snapchat itself is the worst app to use that i have ever seen... it in itself makes little sense, i think thats where IG is far better

I guess it depends on the intention of the user, also. Like I mentioned, I'd rather random chicks don't have my IG versus a SC page, where shit is more temporary. I'd say there are benefits to both, particularly concerning the nudes. But hey, maybe I'm just playing Devil's Advocate.

Can someone just concisely and clearly explain its purpose? Walk me through what it does. Forget that IG has the same features...why was it valued at $2b and has so many users that also have IG?

What it is, essentially, is a temporary storyline that segments can be added to, incrementally. These individual segments disappear 24 hours after they are uploaded, and can only be viewed during the time that they are part of the "story".

For example, if you happen to not log into your account, you will never see what a buddy of yours has uploaded 29 hours ago, but what he uploaded 16 hours ago will still be there.

It also has a chat feature that automatically deletes incoming and sent messages, unless you specify to keep them. Instagram basically copied most of these features and now they have the same stuff.

I'm not sure why it's valued so highly, to be honest. Then again, most people are extremely easily entertained, so it doesn't take much. That is the social media I use least.

When I was single I got boob shots a few times a week from girls I had h/u with and was still on good terms with. The amount of boobs on there must be staggering.

Since they disappear "right away" girls (and guys) feel a whole lot more comfortable doing silly and sexual random things.

As a 29 year old male, I approve of Snapchat (and think instagram, twitter, and Pinterest are a waste of time)

We just send funny things, car related things, chicks asses/tits, etc. I like it that it's just like a quick little "hey this is what I'm up to" kind of thing. A lot of my close car buddies back in MI all keep contact through it which is cool.

The good thing about it is that all your snaps go away so you don't have a cluttered wall/profile page/history. Essentially everyday is like you just created a new account.

As to why it was valued so much: Because snapchat sold to young people with idea that everything you post will delete and never return. This was their selling strategy in 2012/2013'ish when it was new.

That selling strategy was the reason a lot of people got it and did a lot of dirty and sexual things.

In early 2015, snapchat reinvented itself. It's now a full blown social media app. You can get lots of news and updates about what's going on in the world. There's a "Featured" section for reading up on the latest trends such as politics, science, fashion, sports, celeb gossips etc. These stories are presented in a nice short but very effective manner.

It's user base has grown a lot.

I think this is a big part of it. Sometimes you want to casually share something that doesn't merit keeping forever (like posting on IG) or doesn't necessarily warrant comments/responses. Just a "hey, this was funny!" or "saw this on my way to work!" that you can send off.

And nudes.

Honestly, its kind of a cool way to communicate. The photos themselves arent' high quality, so they send quickly, take up no memory in your phone..

I've used it multiple times when i was single to lock it down with a girl.
