What car would you buy?

Yesterday I was out with a friend talking with him about the modifications that I want to make to my Z4M. We ended up thinking how bad investment are the cars in general since he wants to buy something really expensive for himself. He asked me the following case and I did not have a clue.

What car should you buy if you want it as an investment. The rules are the car should cost:
1) From 350.000 to 400.000 euros. No less no more
2) Should be easily resold in case you want liquidity.
3) In one year time frame you should have minimum losses of the initial buy if you want to resell it.
4) The car should be used.

I'm not too well versed in classic Porsches, but these seem to only be going up in value. Last air cooled Porsche should appreciate nicely over time.

I really want a GT2, but that's already in the millions.

Hard to calculate with such a tight number. I have a feeling that the exotic market is in a bit of an unstable market.

1) Continuous bull market and strong economy
2) Many cars ditching Manual transmission
3) Many cars are getting turbo'd

Number 2 has really kept the prices of MT cars pretty high. Look at MT Ferraris and how they compare to their F1 counter parts.

Look at the 997 GT3s and see how strong they are now that the 991 GT3s are only PDK.

GT4s are pretty strong as they are MT and naturally aspirated (however, speculators aren't as happy with their market value right now)

#3 also adds a bit of uncertainty as many collectors and enthusiasts also prefer the linear power bands that is often associated with NA cars.

I meant a 993 GT2.

And I can't stand the 996, but the 997 is beautiful!

The culmination of all the air cooled Porsches right there.

Does a Z8 fit the bill? That'd be my investment choice. Favorite would be a sl gullwing but I think they're over $2m now.

There is a Z8 for sale right now that looks amazing. Black with red interior but I am not sure that it has many hits and is priced as high as I have seen in the past.

Why do I even know this? ... I guess it's always been in my nature to read DuPont registry even as a kid. I love numbers and DuPont ads typically show all the goods in Twitter's limited character format, haha

I know very little about collectible supercars, but since the 488 has not produced a race version (stradale) I would thought that their prices will go lower.

Z8 I think will not fill the bill. There are too many available for sale in Germany and they start from 160.000 euros. SL Gullwing, I did not have a clue about that car. Wow beautiful.

PoorLurker wow lots of information. The gt2 Rs and the gt3 RS4.0 seem to fill the bill. The GT2 RS when I searched for it damn that car is a beast. Between the two which do you believe will resell faster and hold its value better?

If I had one I can't imagine ever wanting to sell it, but I suspect given the time to get one built and the low production numbers and the interest there seems to be for these cars that it wouldn't be to difficult to sell.

Not sure

I hear that they are making a new GT2RS. Will have to see if it's manual transmission, PDK or both.

http://www.topspeed.com/cars/porsche...-ar168537.html

Seems like all of Porsche's turbo cars are not only offered in PDK. Therefore, the 997 GT2RS might be the last GT2RS that will allow people to row their own gears.

Look at what happened with the 911R that came in Manual Transmission and limited numbers.

MSRP of less than $200k. Asking price $699k.

Then again, your friend needs to a lot of research on his own and not listen to some guy who doesn't even own a BMW, haha. Unless of course, this amount of money is just play money. In that case, I can store the purchased Porsche in a garage for free. Will also offer pick up from the airport and room and board.

I can't imagine someone able and willing to spend $400,000 euros on a car soliciting advice from a car forum.

I also find it odd that your friend wants to buy something "expensive" and not a high quality product that just happens to be expensive, but I'm not here to judge.

Your requirements are extremely vague. "Minimal" losses to depreciation after 1 year. What counts as minimal? How many miles does your friend plan on driving the car? Why do you think people on a BMW forum are well-equipped to answer such a technical question.

There is an objective, factual answer to the question you're asking. As a general rule of thumb, nearly all vehicles depreciate on the order of 30% the moment they're driven off the lot, exotics included. The cars that don't tend to depreciate that much are the ones that are limited in production number, but if your friend is intelligent enough to amass the means to spend $400,000 euros on a car, surely he already knows this.

Any 10 year old car that is currently worth 350k-400k euros will fit the bill except possibly being easily resold. I can't think of any cars that are 10 years old, worth a lot this year and won't at least be worth a similar amount next year.
