80K mile service
Happy new year team diesel! What maintenance do you start doing to you D around 80K miles?
I've had my 335D for about 8K miles now and the BPC 2.5 tune for a few weeks...I'll be keeping the car until the wheels fall off. Having said, for those of you that have hit the 80K mile mark and plan on keeping the car well past 100K miles what service do you start doing to the car? I've read through the mike miller pdf (which I really respect), but it's overkill. There's being proactive about maintenance and then there's swapping things out just for the sake of swapping them. The 335D requires enough attention from my wallet as it is, so I might hold off on swapping things out without damn good reason ![]() Things I've done: -Fuel injector replacement (#2)...so far so good! -CBU cleaning -Throttle body replaced -Alternator replaced -Made friends with my SES light -Taken up voodoo, the art of dark magic, and animal sacrifice to ward off further SES lights. ![]() Things I will do: -I've bumped up my oil changes to every 7K miles. I have a cult like devotion to LiquiMoly -Fuel filter every 3rd oil change -I want to do a ATF change soon. Since I'm putting more strain on the AT with a recent tune, I see it as wise to go ahead and do this. I understand 100% why BMW dealerships don't want to do this so that they can avoid hassles about transmission problems. Thoughts? My DSG transmission in my TDI absolutely ate fluid after I tuned it. It was crazy. I also drive hard... -Diff fluid soon, brake fluid etc. |

That all looks very solid. I'm at 82K -- I recently changed out the harmonic balancer and belts and figured I'd get out ahead of a common problem and nixed the boost pipe in favor of a spiffy Forge unit.
Also did the ZF trans service with new filter/pan. Absolutely recommend doing that and got the best kit prices at www.thectsc.com -- all they do is trans kits. Sounds like your service interval for oil, fuel filters, etc are sound. Re the trans, you can get a really decent laser thermometer for under $20 on Amazon these days, but next time I will use my Foxwell unit to monitor fluid temps through the OBD port. How cool is that? The rear diff is easy, other than the fact that you have to suck out the old fluid. I occasionally change out the power steering fluid. It's as easy as falling off a ladder. I seem to be in the minority around here as to the likely benefits of PS fluid changes. Installed Koni FSDs last month at 80K and I am really pleased by the firm-but-not-too-firm ride. The guys with Ohlins will best me on Track Day but hey I live in Washington D.C. We call our Highway Department the "Pothole Department." |
