The Code Monster Appeared

My car has 68k miles on it. It has been largely problem free. I did have the DEF tank replaced not too long ago, but that was harmless to me as it was under warranty. No CBU work yet, although it probably needs it since the MPG is down a bit.

Anyway, today I went to Fry's Electronics to get an old-fashioned corded mouse since my wireless one keeps acting up. When I came back out of the store and cranked her up, I got the old "Engine Malfunction---Reduced Power Output" icon. Coincidentally I was a couple of blocks from the local BMW dealer and am on extended warranty, and so I thought, might as well go over.

Before I went into the SA I used my trusty code reader and got 3 stored codes:

4BC2 Air Flow Meter -Short Circuit
4831 Intake Air Temperature Sensor
4BC6 Intake Air Temperature Sensor

I told the SA the general issue and we scheduled an appointment for Monday. After leaving the dealer, I attempted to clear the codes, as most of my time as an owner the codes go away and don't come back. This time, the 4831 went away and the "Engine Malfunction..." light went away, but the other two codes remain. Without looking it up to verify, this sounds maybe like a MAF issue, which if I were mechanically clever I might handle myself, but since I'm not, I will keep my appointment.

MAF is easy to clean or replace , not worth taking it to them and paying premium price for the part .

Maybe I will hunt up one of the DIY threads and give that a try. I don't even know where the MAF is.

Definitely a MAF. If you have an extended warranty, then get them to do it for you. The reason is that you also will need to reset the MAF and Mean Quantity Adaptations and will need a BMW specific diagnostic/programming software. I would also suggest to replace the air filter at the same time if it has some mileage on it. Your reduced MPG may also be due to a fault with the MAF, and that is why it is important to reset Mean Quantity Adaptations to bring that back in line.

I do have an extended warranty. Interestingly enough I had the air filter replaced 9 days ago at a decent indy shop. Maybe they dorked it up in the process.

That intake temp sensor (internal to MAF) seems to be the common way MAF fails. Mine done the same. It could be due to contamination or due to age, but unlikely due to filter install, unless they did not install it correctly and you had some leaks.

I finally took the beast into the local dealer for the 4BC2 and 4BC6 problem, and sure enough, it was the MAF sensor that they diagnosed. After they get it all put back together, we shall see if it is the only issue. Covered under the extended warranty.

After I got home I looked at the empty garage floor where my car usually sites, and there was some blue watery fluid underneath where the left front headlamp is. I reported it to the dealer. Here's what they said (paraphrasing): "it's the nozzle for the headlamp washer". Fellas, I didn't even know our cars even had such a thing. I can't find it in the manual anywhere. Is this for real? I'm not with the car to even take a look. After I send this off I'll have a look at realoem.com and the GetBMWParts.com site, but this surprises me. What do you fellas know?

Are there little squares underneath your headlights? If so, these pop out when you pull the stalk that sprays windshield cleaner onto the windshield. It also sprays cleaner onto the headlights. So yes, that could absolutely be the case. I'm shocked you weren't aware of this.

I'm not with the car, so I can't verify whether that is the case or not. Cut me some slack. I've only owned the car for 5 years.

Strange this is not covered in the manual, at least that I can find.

Yeah, I mean your windshield washer jets aren't covered in the manual either I assume. Same basic system, just pointed at a different place. If it isn't the jet, your coolant tank is sorta in the area, and our coolant is blue-tinted. Maybe possibly a leak, although I doubt that.

The part is $75.22 at getbmwparts.com. I wonder how hard it would be to DIY as I expect it may not be covered by warranty, and one can imagine how much the dealer will charge. Part # 61677179311

Couldn't say for sure since I don't have that system on my car, but I can't imagine it'd be very difficult.

I filled the washer tank very full and got a minor (and temporary) leak on the PASSENGER side just aft of the right front wheel. After i used washers a couple times, leak went away. I'm keeping an eye on it to possibly happen again. The reservoir is on the passenger side.

Concerning the head light washers, I came across them when i pulled my front bumper cover off. The little covers that Torqu3 mentioned have to be removed for the bumper to come off. Everything else to remove bumper is pretty straight forward. I pulled cover off for research into potential switch over to M3 replica front cover. The E90 version of that replica cover doesn't have the holes for the washers. E92 version does.

Final Result of Repair Work

At 68,482 miles, the dealer replaced Mass Airflow sensor. Also replaced a leaking headlamp washer nozzle on the driver's side. Had noticed blue fluid at the bottom of the car. Both were done under warranty for a $50 deductible. At first it looked like I would have to pay for the nozzle, but BMW NA changed their mind (or the dealer did, but based on what the SA said I think it was BMW NA). MAF sensor would have been $821.55 plus tax at retail price. Nozzle retail installed price would have been $355 plus tax, but had I talked them down to $290 something. GetBMWParts.com price for nozzle was $75.22.

Those are dealer prices. That MAF is WAY overpriced. You can get the part for $250 on the high end of cost, and installating will take 1 hour if you only have 1 arm and 2 fingers. 2 arms and all fingers can do it in about 30 minutes.

Think i heard that you can get the non BMW part but its the manufacturer for less. Yozh, was that a Bosch part you told me about or am i remembering our off line conversation about the Ox sensor? I know you can by it "outside" and its fine. I still run my original MAF but my miles are low at 55,000

Bosch sensor can be had for $184.59 on FCP Euro. Genuine BMW can be had on the same website for $348.09. $800 for a MAF is absolutely ridiculous. I know OP didn't pay for it, but still.

Just to be clear, the $821.55 (or whatever I said) was parts and labor, not just parts, although it's still $$$$$.

Bosch PN is 0281006147
Lots of sources out there for under $200 and takes 10-15min to install. I can not see how BMW charges over $800 for part and labour, unless they bill for the whole hour of work. Also, good idea to replace the air filter while at it.
