Opinions please on problem

2007 335I, Manual. I had the vehicle walnut blasted and new plugs and coils within the last 15,000 miles. HPFP replaced under warranty about 3 years ago.

About 12 months ago developed what I would call an episodic stutter (misfire) with acceleration, usually in 3rd or 4th gear at about 2000 RPM's. Lived with it until it became more frequent to the point that it would go into limp mode episodically. When it finally went into limp mode, pulled Code, was misfire cylinder 1.

4 months ago pulled all the coils and plugs. Plugs in great shape, no smell of fuel. Swapped coil pack for cylinder 1 to cylinder 2 and vice versa. Car ran like brand new for the last 4 months....no stutter, no anything........

Then today it came back. Noticeable stutter under acceleration in the 1800-2200 RPM range. No codes thrown.

Suggestions? I am thinking, Plugs, Coils, VANOS or Injectors. What would you do from here?

Thanks a lot for any advice.

Guess I'll just have to drive the M5.....but believe it or not, I still love my 335I.

what you are describing sounds exactly like a failed coil but you changed them recently which is confusing. however, you did swap them which fixed the issue... so replace cylinder 2 coil then?

Yeah it's confusing the hell out of me too. Yesterday put in new plugs and coils. Still doing it. None of the plugs that came out smelled of fuel. No codes. VANOS solenoids?

I think one of your coils is faulty

Not coils

I don't think it's coils, as I just replaced them all and it is still doing it. Ordering MHD, so will post logs once I get it all going.

Feels like a little stutter while accelerating from 1800 to 2300 RPM's. Not consistent however. Makes me think may be O2 related. Would a cracked charge pipe cause similar?

Thanks

You'll see a cracked charge pipe for sure in logs as your duty cycle on your waste gates will be high or you won't be hitting your boost targets at all.

An update:

Yesterday car went into limp mode, running really rough, no power. Got home shut it down, got up this AM and started it to go to work and still with SES, limp mode, running rough.

Called BMW to see if the HPFP was still covered as this could be one of the culprits (exactly same symptoms when I had it replaced 3 years ago). I doubted it was, as my car was picked up at the beginning of 2007 (>10 years; only has 94k miles on it). To my surprise, the warranty on the HPFP expires tomorrow. Got it to the dealership in time, just hope that is what it is. On the way to dealership no SES, no limp mode, but stuttering with acceleration.

If not, $170 for diagnosis, then make a decision.....Stealership or indy. If something large.......sell it or fix it......

So changed plugs, coils, walnut blasted.

Just to eliminate those particular parts...
Which new plugs at what gap?
Which new coils?
Did you clean the VANOS solenoids?
How many miles?

And if you're still having issues, look at the injectors (not leaking doesn't mean they're perfect) and fuel delivery problems other than the HPFP (if that's not it).

Thanks for the input.

Bosch OEM coils
Replaced both VANOS solenoids at 60k miles (have not cleaned them since)

I recently had a very similar sounding issue after taking the vehicle out of storage last month. The car studdered at the RPM range you described under light throttle but was not throwing any codes.

Just late last year just before putting it in storage I replaced a leaking injector with a used one of the same index I got from a BMW master mechanic buddy of
mine but he couldn't loan me the special tool needed to replace the o-ring and because of that I didn't bother to replace the decoupler either. I ended up ordering new injector orings and reluctantly bought the special tool required to replace them.

Long story short I replaced the o-ring and decoupler and have not had a problem since. I never realized how important it is to replace those two components if you plan on removing your injectors or reusing a used one. Apparently you can destroy your cylinder head by ignoring this.

Thanks for info. Dealership called back, injectors need to be replaced to the tune of $3000. Will either take it to Indy shop or do it myself.

Buy the newest design index 12 injectors (p/n: 13538648937)...Better design and somehow a lot cheaper than the last iteration. Normally it works the other way . Don't forget to order new decouplers separately, they do not come with new injectors like the o-rings do.

The DIY is pretty straightforward providing you don't mind buying the required cable and are comfortable around computers and some trial and error gettin INPA to work on an older PC (required to code injectors). I got lucky and managed to get it to work on a windows 7 64bit system.

Good luck.

Which is why they are called the stealership. Fucking $700 in parts and about 2hr in labor at (a generous) $500/hr and you'd still be out of there for half what they are asking.

Any decent dealer or indy will do it all in for less than $1200.

Buy them yourself and DIY.

Save thousands.

Follow the instructions below (along with other instructions available on forums/google):

Indy shop wants $2700.....looks like I will be doing it myself. Should be fun......any idea on where I can download INPA? Recommendations on where to buy injectors?

I did it about a year ago. The most difficult part (for me at least) is getting the software set up, which really isn't too hard. The mechanical part is very simple so long as you have the right parts. It only took me 2-3 hours going slow as it was my first time pulling them. I ordered mine from rockauto, but I'm not sure if they still have the best deal.

There are great, thorough DIY threads for injectors on this forum that include instructions and downloads for the necessary software. I'd search it for you but they're pretty easy to find. Good luck!

I used this DIY without any issue:

http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=651538

As noted previously make sure to purchase the new injector part number I noted above. All the other part numbers in the DIY should still be current. The new injectors are currently listed on ECS for $127 each which is an insanely great price compared to what we used to have to pay for the previous iterations, dealership would charge double that easily:

https://www.ecstuning.com/Search/Sit...h/13538648937/

Take your time and enjoy the savings!

The codes I got were 2E35 and 30B1. Ordered OEM index 12 injectors from FCP Euro for $850. On their way now. Now to figure out where to find and how to install INPA so I can code the new injectors.

Injectors came in today. Figured it would be a piece of cake after watching numerous video's on the process. I have had a few stumbling blocks and I am looking for advice. I have replaced injectors 1-5 without issues.

1) Injector #6: Damn thing is frozen on. I can wiggle it, but cannot get it out. Guess I will buy the extractor tool for $60, unless someone else has a suggestion.

2) INPA: Where can I download the latest version, and how do I install it on a Windows 8.1 machine?

If I can get throught these two hurdles, I am hoping I will be good to go.

Thanks for any advice.

Man, Good luck with the rest of this install/coding. I started reading this as symptoms sounds similar to what I've been getting. I replaced plugs and coils in the past 5k miles. I'm at 111k now. I've been getting the same hesitation at light/medium throttle particularly in 3rd and 4th gears, if I step on it or medium throttle 1st and second it's barely noticeable if at all.

I really hope it's not the injectors startin to go bad. I have the JB4 so hoping to do a few logs soon and see if it give me any hints.

I haven't been able to get any CEL or codes though. I haven't hit limp mode or anything. We'll see.
