I've actually been wondering, are the D's considered clean air vehicles? I can't find anywhere that defines what a CAV actually is.

I believe the Ds were certified s ULEVs but I do not have that in writing anywhere.

When I bought mine the salesman joked that it's not a wise choice for the suicidal, the emissions are too clean to cause death. Albeit that was in stock form.

I hope no one actually tests this.

I also remember an article where a Prius driver got in the face of D driver about dirty diesels. The D driver reached his fingers into the cars tailpipe and licked them to show how clean the exhaust is. Then challenged the Prius driver to do the same.

I believe the per mile emissions for a 335d stock were rated better than a Prius, so from the factory it certainly deserves that spot.

Emissions, pollution, carbon. All very different things depending on how you define it.
The people writing these articles have no idea and are just contributing to the fear mongering that seems standard in "journalism" these days.

Diesel emits less carbon dioxide (Green house gas) per mile than an equivalent gas engine. Probably way less if you compare similar torque levels, which is what really matters.

The ratings in that article are probably due to the NOx (non GHG) and the un-burnt carbon emissions (soot). This of course was pre DPF and urea injection. Thing is, most people are ignorant and just see "worst polluter ever", without ever knowing what definition of "pollution" is being referenced.

I agree to an extent. There's CO2 and NOx. Both of them are "emissions". Everything that comes out of your tailpipe is "emissions" Gasoline engines tend to put out lots of CO2, and little NOx, while diesels do the opposite. I feel like any V10 is going to emit a lot of something, just because it's a big engine. I'd still love to have a V10 diesel.
