Obviously, my car is now eleven years old. Can I swap my head unit out for a newer OEM. Two goals cosmetically I prefer the silver trim. Wanting Bluetooth audio streaming. I don't have Idrive/Nav.

It has to be programmed for your car .
So you will need to either learn to code it or
higher a coder or one of the company's that do
this . I would try to talk to Bimmergeeks , Bimmertech or
bmwretrofits.
There is also the possibility of getting one of the newer units
that have usb bluetooth and HD and sat radio built in.

You can't get streaming without idrive though.
(well at least last time I did a search on the subject)

You could also get a Dynavin N6 Head unit the only thing that works with L7.
There are cheap adapters that feed the aux or things like the Dension gateway 500s bt.
