From comparing Navigation Units for retrofits..

what I have been able to figure out for quick visual reference before asking for donor car VIN.

ALWAYS ask for donor car VIN before purchasing any navigation system to determine compatibility.

These dates seem a little off. CCC Ended 2009 which then BMW introduced CIC. CIC in 06??

According to OEM parts, yes. It may be due to them being put in cars in Europe. I don't know, just going by what OEM parts is stating.

To even diagnose the CIC further, there have been at least 5 hardware revisions (maybe more) that I can figure out. HW 21, 24, 31, 32 and 42. This probably explains the issues that people find with different firmware revisions and network, IP and password from unit to unit. But I do not have enough data to default map that to specific HW revisions.... yet.

The HW 42 was used in E9x sometime in 2012 till the line went away and then continued in the X1 until 2015. These were before the "HIGH" or "CIC-HIGH" that can be easily identified by the extra 4 pole connector lower right rear and the difference in the mounting tabs.

Since the X1 and E91's share many of the same components (alarm, controls, etc) I'm looking at some of those head units.

I stand corrected. I surely forgot that CIC shared across the platforms.

Yep...

Also, just found a CIC with HW 20 on the tag, that is 6. It has a manufacturer date of Aug 2009.

Any preferences with that one?

I don't know. I asked this question on a post a while back about the differences between HW version on the CIC and it sort of went completely wrong.

I couldn't believe that no one had mapped firmware versions and internal OS parameters back to the HW versions of the units.

I've got ~$300 in parts so far to do the retro. That includes a fully wired emulator. But still looking at the head units. Got it narrowed down to 4 units. 2 HW 42 from X1's, 1 HW 42 from a 335 and 1 HW 31 from a 328.

Hopefully BMW improved the units over the years they were out.

Hardware wise not much to tell in difference factors. Earlier models had an Orange port on the back supposedly was meant for diagnostics. Not much info I read on after that. When I was doing research for my retrofit I tried to stay away from End Year 09 to early Year 2010 builds as they were known to cause issues when updating maps.

I expect it has some little change in the boards, hard drive, source of the connectors, etc.

I'm trying to find that sweet spot between the initial releases that have issues and the end where they inevitable cost reductions start messing things up.
