Replacing E90 BMW Professional Radio

Do I need to program or code when I replace the BMW Professional Radio? Is this possible with the BT tool? If I get the exact part number do I still need to program or code to make it work?

Why are you replacing it?

Did the car already have a Pro Radio as stock equipment?

Most likely yes, unless you get one from a car that was
optioned exactly the same.
Serial number does not make a difference.
It may indicate a Revision or different Hardware
and firmware revisons.
You need a coding setup and may need a and ICOM cable
in cars built after 3/07
What's a Bluetooth tool many aftermarket diags use bluetooth
dongles.
If you are replacing it because of the display there are kits
for doing that on ebay.

It's not a display issue. The head unit is dead. The used part shop wanted to match the part number. The production date was June 2005. Can you point me to a good software and cable so I can code myself? I only have a BT tool but want to learn how to code myself.

Go to the coding board here and look for the Bimmergeeks threads.
As I pointed out you may not be able to program it without and
ICOM Cable which is expensive. You might want to look for a coder
that has that cable localy or get the bimmertech service for recoding.

After 3/07 buid a D/K Can cable wasn't enough to program radio and idrive
functions, it requires and ICOM cable.

Also you may want to grab the hard drive from the old unit and transfer it to the new unit.

This may avoid some FSC coding.
