Coding while car running

Hi everyone. Is it bad to update modules while the car is running? Can they be flashed while car is running? Are there some that cant or shouldnt be flashed while car running? Ive looked everywhere and cant find a straight answer and im wondering because then that would eliminate the need for a battery supply. I was also confused about the whole resetting to default in ncs expert after flashing with winkfp? any help is appreciated.

The only one I don't bother flashing with engine running is CAS (and obviously Transmission and DME). The rest are okay.

Thank You!! Also this is the process i found:

Open winkfp- comfort mode- update ZUSB- select ecu family-enter vin- done- ZB update- wait for "programming ok"

Close winkfp- open NCS expert- select profile- expert mode-click f1-click f3- choose your chassis- select cas- hit back- select ecu you just updated- select job "sg_codieren"-execute job


What I dont understand is the whole ncs expert part. What does it do specifically?

And my last question I think is ive heard that some modules cant be done with the K+Dcan cable and require something else. Is it true? I keep seeing mixed answers, and if so which ones can not be dont with a k+dcan cable as thats all i have for now.

Winkfp flashes/programs bmw firmware to the different modules.

NCSExpert configures/codes this firmware.

Once a module has been flashed it is generally a good idea to code the module to its default settings for your car. Most cars have slightly different options which are listed in the cars 'FA' or in English 'VO' vehicle order. Think of this as yours cars DNA. Each module should be coded to your vehicle order.

Once this is done you can tweak certain settings. But I suggest you do some more reading on this.

Regarding your cable. DCAN cable are ok for the majority of modules. However, your car also has a MOST network for media related devices (idrive / headunit, amp etc). This uses fibre optic communication (as well as can) so is designed to be flashed with an ICOM B unit via the MOST port.

Don't use DCAN cable to program (WinKFP) MOSTGW, MASK, CCC (62,63,A0). There may be ways around this limitation but they are complicated and probably not worth the effort.

You use the DCAN cable for coding (NCSExpert) any module
