Question ipod vs USB stick on 6FL

I got the premium sound option with my car

ipod works when plugged into the USB port but for some reason if I plug a plain old USB stick it does not work. Do i need a player or can a USB stick work? what am i doing wrong?

Thanks - do you simply copy the folders containing the MP3 into it and it works?

Is there any way of organizing the songs on the USB stick into directories and accessing the songs in directories or do you have to go from song to song? Do you just jump from song to song from the steering wheel or the stereo unit? What specific information about the song shows up on the stereo face? I am not sure if it makes a difference but I do not have the Logic 7 or IDRIVE.

I am receiving my 2008 335xi in about 2 weeks with the USB IPOD option! Thanks for your help guys!

for some reason i had problems with the usb "disconnecting" when it was still connected..this only happend on the 4gb usb by kingston. but the 2gb and 1gb seems fine..

i like usb better, cause they are dirt cheap + is easier to use the dictionary part when searching the song

Guess what!!?? I'm using the exact same USB flash drive.
I have been using it for a month so far and it has no problem other than it couldn't show Chinese song titles but that is not really a problem.

USB

I found that you need to put files into folders. If you stick all files into the "root" it would disconnect. So I created "Car1, Car2", etc and stuck about 3 hundred files per folder. In my 08 323i, without premium sounds, it is totally searchable by artist and album.

I am using LEXAR 2GB Firefly USB sticks. Very tiny, so they stick right into the USB port without needing the cable.

get a USB stick for starters, sure... but make some MP3 discs too, they can getcha about 15o to 25o tunes depending on length, but many find the discs to be unreliable...as I have now and then. but the combo of both is kick ass, i have a thousand tunes or so on my USB stick, then 25o of the tunes i listen to most on disc...

FYI, i find the cds much easier to navigate myself, which is why i put my favs on that format.

but both is wicked, you just switch between radio, usb and mp3 disc on your steering wheel... and if you wanna add tunes, either make a new disc with your freshest tracks, or just dump some new ones on the stick.

ipod is alright, but its not necessary.

Kool imma pick up a larger memory stick, i've been using a 2g ipod shuffle. And yes u can create different folders for songs. But i think u can only search folder with the stereo face, unless u guys know how to search it with the steering wheel>?

I'd try reformatting your stick first. FAT32

i think there was discussion about the right file types. you have to format the drive using the appropriate format in order for the car to read...

BMW USB Stick problems

w/ 2007 328i w/ Nav
1) Confirmed that Lexmark firefly works good
2) - SanDisk Fuse 4GB MP3 player did not work at all.
- SanDisk Cruzer 4GB stick worked once in a great while. If it worked at all
it would play a few songs and then cut out. I could not re-init it. Taking
it out, plugging it back in. One time I turned the car on/off and then it
re-init correctly. But not repeatable. I re-formatted it (FAT32). I
plugged it into my linux box to see if there were any weird or hidden
folders (from Microsoft).

So, the problem appears to be with something that SanDisk is doing.

Go with the known good devices.
This is a good thread.

Well, I got the 8 GB Sandisk Cruzer Contour from Costco for a steal at $60, but the sucky part is it's too tall to fit under the armrest... didn't even bother loading songs onto it to see if it would work well or not.

Which other sticks would fit well?
