Latest trip to MIR drags........a case of the limps

was a crazy day with ups and downs.

NHRA was at the track over the weekend. The Top Fuel guys were there Saturday doing their 300mph+ blasts so the track was in great shape for them.

We had the left lane rented out and the NHRA pro mods had the right lane.....it was a hoot watching them blast off, then seeing a measly low 11 second run from a CL65 AMG, what a contrast.

I finally got back to the track after running 12.89 w/ just V1.47 and stock RFT last November.

My car has been having a constant limp mode problem for the past several weeks, runs great until 5500rpms in 3rd gear, then limp. I was running the Attache w/ FMIC/DP tune and tried everything I could think of to stop the limping. Went and visited Mark @ Helix in Philly and he logged all types of things and was convinced it was not the tune but a hardware related issue. He's right I think, he called me today to tell me he's still working on it.

I switched to a JBX a few days ago in hopes it would cure the limps, no luck. Had a few 3rd gear pulls on the highway yesterday that were limp free so to the track I went. Put in the 104 octane and had at it. Went out and tested different JBX settings, all limped at 5500rpms in 3rd, so set it to JB2HHR (all the way up) and decided to short shift out of 3rd into 4th at 5000rpms to skip the limp. Well all that did was create a limp in 4th before I crossed the finish line. Ran 4 times with these results. Honestly, for street tires, shifting at 5000rpms (leaving 1700rpms of peak HP on the table) and limping before finishing i'm really happy w the results.

1) 12.81 111.19mph 2.001 60ft
2) 12.79 113.16mph 2.076 60ft
3) 12.62 110.71mph 1.928 60ft
4) 12.66 112.44mph 1.958 60ft

The 12.62 is my new personal best....whats really funny about it I shifted into 5th gear at the end of the run to avoid the limp in 4th

5th!!

its safe to say my car is making plenty of power, I just need it to run right.

I left a lot on the table today w/ the car.......

Here are some pics and more info from the day......some others weren't as lucky as I was and didnt leave w/ their cars intact.

Pics from today

Clem from the boards was there today...I'll let him chime in on his impressions and his run info

launching.....he actually pulled a 1.8x 60 foot on street tires and 6MT...only to miss 2nd

Me staging, Clem took these shots

One of my runs

Cooling down...DA was over 2100 ft today. It was HOT.

BMWSOB launching on his 1st run.....

CL65 AMG launching. Great to see someone raging on a car this expensive. Hit mid 11's stock.

Blackbenzz launching his beast

mid 11's CLK55 cooling down

CL600 Renntech / CL65 / E63 Renntech

Another angle

Very nice M3/4 w/ GT35R that was running 128-129mph traps on pump gas....

The stars of the day were the ProMod cars. This particular one was a BEAST. According to the crew chief who I spoke with, this car holds the current record for highest trap at 248mph in ProMod. I can tell you, it will bust your ear drums out. I was able to get very close to these cars while they were idling/ burning out/ launching and HOLY CRAP is it awesome.

Take a look at this et and mph....something look weird??

and the worst wreck on the day. Beautiful Huge turbo Supra totalled. He foolishly kept in it after spinning the whole track. the rear end finally kicked out to the left and then caught. I was watching this in horror. As soon as it caught at the end of the track, his car SHOT across the track and impacted the right concrete wall almost head on. His car jumped a good 6-8ft in the air and landed back on the nose, then spun around for a few more hundred feet. The driver luckily walked away.....his car however may never see a road again.

His friend came and picked him up, another very nice, very fast Supra

Those are very respectable times. If only.....
I was in the same situation. My car doesn't like JB2HHR, but I managed to get past the 1/8 mile before it limped. I coasted to a 12.3 @ 107mph! I think that could of been my 11 second run if it made it all the way through on boost.

thanks!

It wasnt just that I was limping in 4th....I was shifting out of 3rd at 5000rpms! That is a huge waste of this cars powerband especially on the 1/4, but it was necessary to avoid an even earlier limp. Just lets me know what the N54 can do.

BTW....my car is a manual.

Great job. Excellent time for not using DRs. With a good launch you would have been at 12.3 or lower. I can't wait till you can figure out your limps. Did you get to beat/suprise some V8s out there? Whenever I got to the drags, it seems like the drag strip announcer assumes the BMW is going to lose, and then is rather surprised how quick they run. Its kinda fun! I really think I wouldn't have a much fun in a dedicated high performance car like a Vette, even though it may be much faster

I was fighting w/ a Renntech tuned E63 all day, he did edge me out by a hundredth of a second though. His car has more in it i'm sure.....but so does mine .

If you REALLY want a sleeper, pick yourself up one of the DUMPTRUCKS that were running in the 10's at this track the week before. Unreal.

That's me in the silver E92. My very first time at the drags and man what a blast! The private track rental is the way to go if you are a beginner. No pressure, just learn and have fun. MIR is a nice track and as the day progressed the track got seriously sticky.

BTW, I am bone stock! I am not running V2 @ 94%.

I do have 19" CSL reps with 265's out back set at 30 lbs.

First run ever........

60' - 2.209
1/4 - 13.199
MPH - 108.99

Best 60' - 1.861
My cell phone rang right after launch and I instintively looked at the stereo to see who it was. Then I missed 2nd gear and still ran 13.011 @ 109.64! Missed my chance at a really good run.

Best ET - 12.81 @ only 108.51. I say only because when I hit 4th the car fell on its face and sputtered across the line. Not in limp mode but same result.

Best MPH - 110.79 on a 12.896 ET. My 60' on the run was 2.134! Another missed opportunity. Doh! Another run was 12.93 @ 110.53 with weak ass 2.110 60'.

My car is also a manual and I never put together a perfect run. Bad launching and falling off boost on the 2-3 and 3-4 shifts were my main weaknesses. My car is fast but I could use the driver mod.

6 out of 8 full runs were in the 12's. Only my first run (ever) and the missed shift run didn't make it. Bottom line - I had an fantastic time and can't wait to try this again.

you did great! For your 1st time out and running on street tires, having 6 out of 8 runs in the 12s is very good. Now your going to be on the quest for that perfect run next time around. I think your car has 12.7s or maybe even 12.6s in it w/ a great run.

and yes, the track was very well prepped yesterday.

More observtions from yesterday..........

It's easy to see why the automatics are getting better times. Lots of variables with the manual. Maintaining full boost through the run was elusive for me. I think with some practice I could get this car in the 12.5 @ 112-113 range. Not bad for having one (imaginary) mod.

Sniz's car is very fast and with stickier tires and no limp mode issues in 3rd gear, I could see him easily trapping 115-116.

My car hates to be rushed into 2nd gear which results in me granny shifting and losing valuable time. 3rd and 4th, no problem. Missing 2nd twice in 9-10 runs was about what I expected.

Even as a total beginner, there are guys who drive much worse than me. There was a beautiful new E60 M5 that ran repeatedly. Wow, was that guy bad. He just could not drive that thing. Nice guy though. I'm not sure he ever made a full run and seemed to enjoy riding the brakes all the way down the track. When he finally used launch mode, he just sat at the line until smoke began pouring out from under his car. Toast!

Supras with big turbos are stupid fast! That poor guy that wrecked the red one was coming right at me when he lost it. I had just completed my last run and was coming down the service road when I look up and see going sideways fast at about 3/4 track. I was about 100 yards from him when he ran straight into the wall. Freaky and a total shame.

They didn't make me wear my helmet until the last few runs. I thought it would hinder me but the opposite was true. I seemed more focus as all I could see was straight ahead. Wish I had worn it the whole time.

If you ever get the chance at one of these track rental days, do it! For a newbie it was the perfect environment to get some experience. Very relaxed and when you feel like running, just pull up to the line and run. Best $100 I have ever spent on a car!

Nice runs! I hope you get the limping issue fixed so we can see some all-out runs with your car!
