Legal implications of removing 2nd Cat

What are the downsides when using a full exhaust that remove the secondary cats?

I dont know how anal cops are in NYC, some crazy ones force people to take off their after market exhaust by keep on ticketing them here in CA. I can see they use impounding as part of their threat.

here's one real story

In California, if a cop really wants to be a dick, and check for straight pipes (no cats)...they can send you to the ref and give you a pretty big ticket..in the thousand zone.

Running catless is something we all did with the Evos and this was a common problem. I've seen a case where a cop placed a mirror under the car to check for cats.

I think BMW is just trying to be super emission friendly with the 2 sets of cats compared to most cars out there that only have 1 single cat. When I had my exhaust that deletes the 2ndary cats, I still think that all of the chemicals are being oxidized by the Pt, Pd, etc. in the primary cats with no issue. If not, you will be able to smell a sulfuric like odor and see your exhaust fume being brown, lol.

I don't think you'll have that problem in NYC...

If you install a 02 simulator, there is no regulatory downside, unless the car is too loud (which can be remedied with a quieter muffler).

Otherwise, you'll just be a polluter!

In NY As long as CEL doesn't come on you will pass inspection.
You may get pulled over for a modified exhaust ticket if it is too loud or if the cop is an A-hole. This usually requires you to pay a fine, or fight it and get a shop to write up a receipt saying you fixed it. I was dismissed. But really there is no way to tell other than sound. I Don't think a cop would actually get on his knees to check if your missing a cat.

I ran no cats on my STI with no check engine light and I passed my inspection. As long as the car isn't obnoxiously loud, you should be alright. On my 335i I think I will be staying with a set of HFC's.

The only time I saw a car get checked for cats/no cats was at the entrance of a car show. It was a worked '69 Camaro.

technically non-carb/epa exempt modifications to emissions control device loop is a federal law violation.

they have these things that look like those 2 digit radar signs you drive by at triple digits to see what they read; that sniff exhausts and snap photos now. say two of them in testing in far north of atlanta (alpharetta area).

they are actively working on getting rid of gross polluters.

I do understand on a car like a camaro with a 112lsa cam at idle spitting raw gas fumes out and choking 3 cars behind making baby jesus cry. that is not good for the baby

but if you are running at a track or strip i don't have any beef with that.
