Will there be turbo lag with DME81 too?
I keep reading about all those people with DME80 that got upgraded to 29.2 and the lag is a bitch. My car that was built in May should be here next week, and I'm wondering if it will exhibit the same lag as those experiencing with 29.2?
Great... already dreading finding this out instead of just being excited to pick up the car next week! Which I am... don't get me wrong. But all this lag talk really sucks! Last edited by Lotus99; 06-19-2008 at 02:53 AM.. |

I'm with ya man. All this lag talk is really disappointing. This is my first Bimmer, and all this tuner stuff really sucks. You'll have to keep us posted on if your new car has the lag straight from the factory. Can't seem to find anybody with BRAND new cars and lag.......hmmmmm

Some people need to espouse hyperbole to feel relevant on these boards.
I have an April '08 build and haven't noticed any discernible lag. Don't worry about what's said here and just drive the car - you'll be happy with it.

People who had their cars prior to the new V29.2 program and got their cars updated will probably feel more lag then before the update, while OPs that purchased their cars with the new update already should not feel anything because they would not have known what it felt like before....

I have an april 08 build. notice a little lag but still very happy with the overall performance of the car. Came out of a 05 545i and this new car blows it away

![]() I do understand how it might seem like people are overreacting to the lag issue with 29.2. But, IMHO the lag on my car doubled or tripled as soon as I was updated to 29.2. I had put 25000 miles on my 07 e90 before the update and I can discern a significant difference after the update. |

I don't see what the ECU hardware would do any difference. The 29.2 controls the car the same with the v81 as it does with the v80.
Yes, there is a lot of lag. Then again, I'm coming from a supercharged car that hit nearly 500 ft lbs of torque the second you hit the gas, so I'm not used to any lag, but still, the turbo lag seems a bit excessive to me. Throttle response is pretty poor too. The pedal is dead for what feels like at least an inch. Oh well, overall the car is completely worth it. Turbo lag isn't a big deal if you know how to drive a car. Just shift high enough to drop back into boost range and it's not a big deal. Edit: Hahaha, I said 500 pounds of boost at first ![]()

For those of you reporting "lag" with the stock setup and 29.2, do you ever drive the car in "DS" (if you have the Steptronic)? From what I remember, stock response in "DS" mode always seemed very snappy, almost to the point where it was jerky. Is "DS" laggy now as well with 29.2?

perhaps its not turbo lag? maybe its DBW lag? in that case the turbo's aren't laggy (we know that due to pre-29.2) but maybe they lagged out something else.

I am just skeptical about the situation as of right now. BMW makes cars aimed at "enthusiasts." Why would they come out with a program for the 335i (a turbo car that they advertise as having no turbo lag) that would create turbo lag?

It's good to be skeptical, especially about anything on the internet. IMO it's because they realized that (1) the pre-29.2/MSD81 cars were too close in performance to the new M3 which makes it nearly impossible to justify the cost difference for most people who would have otherwise jumped on the M3, and (2) they're hoping that the revised wastegate duty cycle timing accompanied by the changes in 29.2/MSD81 will reduce warranty and/or turbo/wastegate failures that are being experienced due to a poor design which has durability issues even at stock boost levels. Othewise, why would they implement something so drastic to curb the tuning of the N54 which is a tiny fraction of the cars produced. I find it hard to believe that so many enthusiasts, sensitive to every change in their cars, are all completely wrong about there being such a change in driveability (lag) after being updated with Progman 29.2. |
