Lifter Noise and Liqui Moly

I bought 328i and haven't done oil change yet. (gas pedal is too smooth lol)

I thought this noise was normal when inspecting the car.

Yesterday, it was louder than normal right after starting up. (1:35 on video)
I drove around and it sounds like 2:53 which is not bad at all.


Since I don't know history of oil usages, I want to see if I can make it better.

I am going to put

Liqui Moly Engine Flush (I will put some Seafoam in oil and drive around little bit too since you can't drive with this stuff in)

Castrol edge 5w30 (some people say you should use thicker oil. some people say it's just temporary fix and will make it worse. oh well)

Liqui Moly Mos2

Once I finish in few days, I will post my review.

If you have any other tip, please share!

I wouldn't worry about the SeaFoam if you're going to use the LM Engine Flush.

Mos2 is highly reviewed. LM also makes a hydraulic lifter additive. https://products.liqui-moly.com/hydr...dditive-1.html

There is also more advanced one called Cera Tec.

Yeah I am getting confused. They are all for smoother engine and have great reviews.

Maybe I can put half/half?

But you can't drive with it or rep the engine with it.
If I put seafoam or marvel mystery oil, I can drive it and it will get into difficult areas?
I don't know how oil circulates in idle vs driving though....

1200 miles ago I did the Engine Flush and then an oil change with the new MolyGen 5W40. I put the appropriate amount of CeraTec in there. The car runs really great, I'm happy. I've been using LiquiMoly fluids for several years now on two BMWs.

I think the CeraTec is marketed as being better than the Mos2. Don't quote me on that.

And, I guess that is a fair point? I'm not sure. Maybe do one this oil change and the other the next oil change. Mixing them gives me the possible heebie jeebies.

Throw in a 300ml bottle of Liqu Moly MOS2 anti friction treatment and it should help as well.

I did 7 quarts of LM 5W-40, and two whole bottles of Ceratec. Ticks only on start up for about 3 seconds tops, but after that none at all. Looking into the lifter additive myself.

the issue with driving with any additive is bearings.

you're thinning the oil out even more and decreasing it's film strength.
That's why the LM stuff tells you just to idle it and not drive it.

Seafoam says that you can drive with it in the crankcase, but just be aware that seafoam is a product from the era of big bearing clearances and american v8s.
If you drive with it in the crankcase I certainly wouldn't beat on it or hit the higher rpms.
It's essentially naptha.

I use Motul 5w-40 and I don't get any valve tick until the next oil change comes and I follow the factory interval.

2 cans of Molyslip is even better than MOS2. I've been using it on my beater N52 and my M3 for awhile now without issues.

Fresh oil with Castrol LL ALWAYS got rid of my lifter noise, until around 1/4-1/2 life of on condition oil monitoring. I never went past half life if not 1/3 life anyways so when it would tick I would change.

Changed to a non* approved oil (won't bother mentioning what I use because I'll just get flamed) and haven't heard a noise since. 70k kms ago.

Mine went away with motul 5w40 100% synth. It is bmw ll01 (approved), i changed the oil every 5000km and drive it every day, i found out flooring it helped when the oil was a bit hot

The tick tends to go away when the engine is fully warmed up on my E90.

MoS2 is more periodic for high mileage or heavily worn engines. Use Ceratech everytime though.

Think of it this way...MoS2 is more of a solid agent meant to fill in the roughness of metal, unlike a friction modifier that keeps the oil from breaking down (think Lucas oil stabilizer). Ceratech has both a friction modifier and an agent to fill in rough spots. Two fa da price a one, eh!

I do intervals of each, I switch between Ceratec and MOS2 between each oil change. I've been doing this for all my cars, N52, N55, S65.
