vinyl window trim question?

i'm planning on getting the chrome trim on my e90 covered with the matte black vinyl trim. but i just saw my cousin's trim job on his e46 and it shrunk from the heat. so now there's a gap and u can see some chrome.

so can the vinyl trim shrink due to the heat? and does it get scratched easily???
