Are you seeing any on road gains from this? How did you modify the UR intake to do this?

Puddles, rain, etc...

IMO, I would rather have a shield in front to deflect the air around to the back so nothing hits the filter head on.

The odds of my car going in a 3 foot puddle and submerging the intake completely to hydro-lock it are pretty next to none.

But thanks for the heads up. I'll keep my eyes out for them.

Well I did this at the same time I swapped my DP's, so it'd be hard to give credit to the intake when I'm sure the DP's are more or less responsible for the increase in performance (throttle response, turbo build up, sound, etc).

However, I assume that it'd be sucking in more air (hopefully colder too) than the original location. The UR CAI sits right underneathe the driver side headlight and uses a sealed top K&N filter which I absolutely hated.

yeah dude, watch out for water getting sucked in.

i had the dinan CAI for my e46 330i which has the filter exactly where you have it and i stalled my car after hitting a huge puddle and hydroplaning. i thought for sure my engine was toast. but luckily it started back up after letting it sit for 15-20 mins.

also, the dinan CAI included a "sleeve" of some sort that goes over the filter. it supposedly blocks out the water while still allowing air to pass directly through to the filter... it apparently didnt work that well in huge puddles. i never had a problem with rain though.

your filter looks naked so it wouldnt take much for water to get through... i would be very concerned...

I bought 2 filters. The one I'm using now, and a shielded one. I tried them both out the the one I'm using now fit the best and had a much better filter. The cone on the shileded one was the size of my fist!

Well I'm planning on driving it on normal roads like highways etc, so I think I should be ok as far as rocks, nails, trees, animals, people or anything else you guys can think of hitting it and somehow destoprying my engine. lol

I'm expecting to get the odd rock/pebble hitting it like anyother part of the car, so I should be ok. I'm gonna be checking up on it after every rainfall to see if the filter is getting damp/wet/soaked, and make the necessary adjustments.

I'm not saying that your engine is going to hydrolock.
I'm just thinking that some water could get up in there.

Also the dirt that's going to hit that filter is going to build up really quick.
This is why I believe that some sort of shield to deflect the air so the air is not blowing directly on the filter.
IMO, this is ideal.

It's a regular UR CAI with an additional 45 degree bend coming out of the intake tip coupled to the filter.

I agree with you on the dirt building up on the filter quick. When I took out the original filter that came with the intake, it was a nice shade of black after only like 3,000 kms. lol

I'm gonna look into maybe adding some sort of a bracket on the housing part of the filter and attaching a deflector of some sort onto that. Hopefully that should help it out.
