Can someone clarify E85 MHD tunes please
MHD documentation says recommended to upgrade fuel pump for E50 maps.
![]() Does this mean the percentage of e85 maps needing fuel pump upgrade are 50% or more? So I could run up to the 40% E85 tune on stock fuel pump? Also which base octane fuel do I have to mix the E85 with? ![]() Last edited by TheMidnightNarwhal; 05-01-2019 at 04:46 PM.. |

Stock fuel pump should be able to handle 25% and 40% (if your LPFP is healthy). I have a stage 2 pump and run the 60% map @ 100% ethanol in the tank with no dips during a wot pull. HPFP seems to handle the surge of ethanol as well.

All stock pumps will be vary, some can handle up to E40-50 and some can barely handle E30. I would only try E30 max on stock pump IMO. I also run a stage 2 lpfp and run E50-60 no problem.

it really depends on your lpfp, some pumps run e40 with no issues some can barely run e85. Always try to mix e85 with best gas pump available to you
i ran e40 with stock pump for almost 2 years with no issues main thing is to log and check your lpfp , it shouldnt be dipping under 50 psi, its ok if it dips for a split second and it comes back up, but if it stays below 50psi then it cant handle that much e85 in the tank 2007 E92 335i / VRSF 5" FMIC-Charge Pipe-DCI-Inlets/ TurboSmart Plumb Back DV / XHP / E50 Custom Tune by WedgePerformance / APEX ARC8 / MT ET Street / 11.71 @ 119 / Instagram.com/silent11n54 Quote:

Ok thanks, I'm really only interested for days I go at drags. Another question just to make sure, since our fuel tank is 60 liters, that would mean a 30% mix of E85 would be pump 18 liters of E85 and fill rest of tank up with regular fuel? For the regular fuel what octane is needed, normal premium which would be 91? I'll make sure to log lpfp additionally to corrections to see how well it handles. EDIT: Should I instead run V8 labeled E30. Does E30 mean 30% ethanol or a 30% of pure ethanol and rest of fuel OR 30% of E85 mixed with 70%regular gas Last edited by TheMidnightNarwhal; 05-01-2019 at 06:37 PM.. |

My stock can barely handle e20-30 but load is 170 at 6500. So obviously its also the boost (more so the air pulled) at 6k+

when i mixed e40 i was usually going 50/50 e85/94 oct sometimes i put a bit less E than pump gas, depends on how my logs are looking because every e85 is different, sometimes they have only 70% ethanol content in it.
there are numerous e85 calculators on android and ios , download the app and it will help you get the mixture right, or close to it... i pretty much did a log after every fillup to make sure everything is good try using the best pump gas available to you 2007 E92 335i / VRSF 5" FMIC-Charge Pipe-DCI-Inlets/ TurboSmart Plumb Back DV / XHP / E50 Custom Tune by WedgePerformance / APEX ARC8 / MT ET Street / 11.71 @ 119 / Instagram.com/silent11n54 Quote:

Ok. Best pump gas wouild probably be petro 94. Or they do sell some race gas 105 octane but might be overkill and far to get it. But if you mix 50/50 on a E40 mix are you not going to make the fuel pump have to work more? Because at 50/50 mix you're basically E50 right where they recommend a better fuel pump? |

You don't just rough an estimate, use a calculator every time. Also be aware of what's in your tank from a previous blend and that you likely won't be filling with the same amount of ethanol every time because you will be filling at various tank levels

Shouldn't the calculator be asking for your tank size and desired E85 mix. What is usually E85 octane, would it show at the pump? |

Do you think that's pump variation or ethanol percent variation? US Dept of Energy says "E85" can actually be 51-83% ethanol. If you mix "E85" to be "E50", it would be only 30% ethanol if the fuel was actually 51% ethanol.

i use E85MIX app for android e40 is usually close to a 50 /50 mix... try putting 3L more of pump gas than E85 and see how the pump takes it Logs are your friend ! log log log |

Use an online calculator to figure out how much E85 to gas(91,93, etc) to mix to get the correct percentage. Also be aware that what the pump says might not be actually e85, might be e70/75, etc so that factors into how much you need to actually mix to achieve your goal.
And the E30/40/50/whatever is total percentage of ethanol to gas, so E30 is 30% ethanol |

Plug in some numbers and figure out what you need for the mix.

I don't think anyone's actually answered one of your questions. E85 means it is a blend of gasoline and ethanol, up to 83% ethanol to 17% gas.
The sucky thing about E85 is that it can actually be a varying content blend of 51/49 to 83/17...depends on where you're at, season, quality of supplier... So, assuming that the E85 you're buying is truly 83% ethanol, a 50/50 mix would yield an E40 mix, roughly. This is why it's ideal to measure the ethanol content every time(before) you fill up, if you want to get things right. |
