Bizarre behavior of exterior lighting

I just noticed that if the car is parked at night and I enter and exit through the passenger door and never open the drivers door, the exterior lights (parking lights, puddle lights from the door handles etc.) remain on indefinitely.
Luckily I went back in the garage to check something in there before it drained the battery.
If I lock the door with the fob or open and close the drivers door, then the lights shut off in less than a minute.

Is this normal? It seems strange.
