Has any one done any kind of upgraded transmission to their m57 platform? Mine has a few hard shifts and am really considering an upgraded one if it's not a huge process. Side note i have full emissions deletes, swirl flap ,upgraded inter cooler and hard piping. Was a trans tune already on stock trans

I would love to have a better torque converter in this car. Apart from emissions, that was the only other legitimate complaint I ever had - loose TQ converter. They did that on purpose, just like the trucks, because good-running diesels with tight converters are just going to scare some people.
What's the story on alternative converters, Yozh? |

When I asked a while back they said it was higher stall... Dumb. We don't need that crap. Maybe they got a lower stall one now let us know if you find out |

The gamechanger by Rod Sutphin is pretty much the only option that I know of. My trans has a rough shift, and under full throttle while towing 6500 lbs there are certain situations when I can feel clutch slip, but not much at all. I did new solenoids on my trans and it seems to have smoothed out some of my rough shifting but I can still force it to miss 5th gear, which worries me. Just got home from a 2300 mile tow with 6000+ behind me though, so I guess it's alright for now. When I have it rebuilt (or do it myself) I'll do clutches and the gamechanger. The people with it rave about it.

I spoke with DUDMD a couple days back about installing the torque converter upgrade and now seriously considering making the drive up! Since I got DWR's tcu tune 2 years ago and there hasnt been any updates for the x5d at least, I may try Rod Stuphin's TCU tune also.

Rob - this is quoted from Sutphin's FB:
"The converter is redesigned to last longer for performance applications than the original, with increased performance and gas mileage through a more efficient flow of power from the engine to the transmission. This TQ converter is mechanically setup tighter than the stock TC. It has an upgraded captive clutch with an 80% increase in holding capacity. The stator is replaced with one for performance to transfer the TQ. Expect use-able power gains of 10-15% in the TQ ramp in rate. What I mean by TQ ramp in rate is TQ requested by throttle input. You get to use a lot more of the total TQ sooner throughout the throttle range." https://www.facebook.com/SutphinTuni...UCA&__tn__=K-R |

So, as far as I can tell, it's a much tighter converter, which translates to a much less "sloshy" feeling of the vehicle. A more direct connection from the motor to the wheels, which seems as though it would be highly beneficial to someone seeking performance, or like me, someone towing a lot and looking for maxiumum economy. I'm aware that my fuel savings won't add up to the cost of the new TC for a long while, but if I plan on driving this X5 another 250k miles, I would eventually see the benefits.

Higher stall... it wasn't intended to be a high stall TC, about 2400 rpm max before it pushes through the brakes. Its night and day different from the loose stock TC. |
