5" HD or 7.5" HD Competition Intercooler for stock turbos?

Hey guys,

So title really, my car will be FBO on stock turbos.
DP's / FMIC / Intakes with MHD Stage 2+ on 93 oct. Just street usage, will the 5" HD be sufficient, or should I go straight to the 7.5" HD? I may add Outlets / Inlets and a custom tune later on down the line, but that is probably it.

Thanks!

Thank you!!! Is the 7.5" HD Race worth considering for stock turbos? Or should I stick with the Competition?

Buy the best intercooler you can afford.

Yes! Plenty of people run the VRSF 7.5" Race or the BMS 7.5" Race with no issues on stock turbos and it's a one time buy.. you'll never need to buy another.

I know someone who switch from a Vrsf 7 inch to the CSF intercooler and noticed a difference in throttle response.

Sometimes too big is not good either.

No its fine. And even if there is a throttle response difference, the reduction in inlet temps is far more worth it.

Tweak some settings for throttle pedal and completely fix any perceived response issues if you have to.

Oh, I was just about to order the race aswell based on the above advice from other posters haha!

Are there any cons to using the Race on a daily driver FBO on stock turbos?

I went the other direction......just ordered a Amazon 7" intercooler for $216. About half the price of a VRSF. I figured what the hell.....the reviews looked great (on Amazon and here on the e90 forums).

I'm going to log temps with the stock intercooler....and with the Amazon one. I guess I will see if I wasted $216 or not

A damp paper towel spritzed with water will do better than the stock FMIC. This doesn't mean anything by itself. Is it good though? Generally you'll need to spend a bit more. The big VRSF is awesome, and I've heard good things about the big BMS too.

I switched from arm motorsports 7" to VRSF race 7.5", it was the best thing i have done to this car, i'm still FBO (inlets and outlets) stock turbos.
It's a bit laggy but i immediately felt the difference with the dropped air temps (almost half), the car feels faster and you can see air temps dropping down while you're doing a pull lol.

So from what I gather the 7.5 Race intake temps are a few degrees cooler than the 7.5 comp HD but the 7.5 Race might give you throttle lag if you're on stock turbos?

7.5 Race = upgraded turbos?
7.5 HD = stock turbos maxed out to upgraded turbos?

7.5 race on stock turbos here. my IATs simply don't go up.

Get the race and be done with it. It will also save you additional time/expense if you upgrade turbos down the line.

There aren't really any cons since lag is negligible.

I have never, EVER, heard of a customer complain about a FMIC that was "too big". Never seen it happen. I suppose there will be that one guy, who wears brown corduroys, drinks wine out of a coffee cup with his pinky finger extended, who was the kid that always asked extra questions in class in lieu of getting out early, who will contest this, and talk about the night and day response difference. Bah.

Go big, never worry about it again. If you're super casual about cars and even joining a forum is a huge departure, anything you put on will be better than stock. If you want to push the skinny pedal and have things happen, go big. Again, never have I experienced anyone complaining that "yeah, my intake temps are great but there is this TRACE of lag that just bugs me. I'd rather lose some hp and go smaller." Those guys we point to big N/A motors and nitrous.

If you don't plan on changing it out again selling it and buying another for a bit more and then installing it and cutting more things up to make it fit the 2nd time then go for it.
