Nissan unveils new lightweight sound-deadening material for cars
Weighs one-fourth of traditional sound insulation with the same capability
Nissan has developed a new lightweight material for keeping vehicle cabins quiet that it says offers energy-efficiency advantages over more conventional sound-deadening materials. It's demonstrating the technology this week at CES. Nissan calls it "acoustic meta-material" and says it offers the same sound isolation of road and engine noise — between 500 and 1200 hertz for you sound geeks — as the rubber board commonly used for the job. Yet it weighs just one-quarter as much, Nissan says.

I heard it's just a 2 inch layer of asbestos.

Oh good -
We all know that when the US began using asbestos in 1858, it's worked out so well....a perfect insulation with no health issues

LOL. Really? Someone pioneers a material that can potentially save 20-50 lbs in a typical sedan and all you want to joke about is asbestos?
Sure, it's designed to make EVs lighter and quieter. But we're looking at a typical 3 series sedan crossing 4,000lbs for curb weight plus a driver. Four. Fucking. Thousand. Every technology that will add "lightness" to today's car is only going to HELP. Plus it doesn't look like it's a special material, it's the CONSTRUCT that makes it light and noise retardant.

Love reading about your beloved Z4M and Corvette, but wouldn't you want to know what this new miracle drug insulation is comprised of?

Looks like the same sound deadening panels we use in aviation.

The “material” looks like your run of the mill plastic. The secret sauce is in the lattice structure as the engineer explicitly stated? My Japanese is rusty (non-existing to be precise, except ‘domo arigato, Mr Roboto’) and I still fail to see how this is NOT exciting? Anything to add lightness on a car is a good thing, IMO. Even the MZ4 Coupe and the Corvette, both could stand to shed 200#s if you ask me.

If this material is widely adapted by the car makers, the royalty along could fund Nissan for the next 50 years IMO.

No, you need this in your street car.
Race cars are meant to be loud. No sound deadening material shall grace the inside and outside of a race car. Because race car. Because why shave 75% of the weight when you should shave 100%?
