Trouble with turbos

In this months Roundel there is a letter from a guy unwilling to buy an E90 because of all he's heard about turbos wearing out and other turbo related problems.
Does anyone have any info on this ?

No, but after many years in health care I can testify that there is no cure for stupid.

Last time I replaced turbos in a car like this, it was $5000 in parts and labor. I think that is a good reason to think twice if you want to purchase and keep long term.

I don't remember reading that in Roundel. I personally am not hoping on the turbo bandwagon with all the problems people have had with HPFP.

There seem to be 3 "issues" with the TT I6

#1 Heat (largely corrected with installtion of OEM oil cooler)
#2 Fuel Problems (high pressure fuel pumps (HPFP) going bad and/or high ethanol content in gasoline)
#3 Wastegate rattle (BMW reprogrammed the car to fix this, but at the price of increased turbo lag and slightly reduced power or so it is said)

What do you consider long term. If I like a car I will keep it for 7 years plus. My E-46 is almost 9 years old and running perfectly. Will the Turbo models last that long with reasonable care ?

There's a lot of info on why the turbos go bad on the site search. Some of which are the actuators, waste gates, turbos not spooling (like the poster above) and various other things.

So many cars are turbos now, we're not talking about a 85 Mitsubishi. You really think someone who buys a F250 with a list price of 48k and has twin turbos has to think twice about keeping for the long term? They'd be a pretty darn unintelligent if they leased or if they didn't plan on keeping it for the long term.

Thumbs down Another dead fuel pump!

Not uncommon. My car was at dealer every month for an excrutiating 5 months for a day or two at a time. In the end issues not solved BMW decided to swap out all my electronics. Yes ALL of them, GPS, CCC, Idrive, Amplifier, Bluetooth Module etc. THe car sat at the shop looking horribly gutted out for 3 weeks. Credit to them, they put back together you can't tell it was ever touched. Anyway, I hate to imagine whats coming now. I have Turbo issues now. No its not the Dinan Flash, these started back when I was stock and are recorded by BMW already. My wastegates are due for replacement, but loss in midrange power makes me suspect the Turbos are going out too. I was in the shop two weeks ago at DeSimone BMW for emergency unrelated issues. Was on my way to NYC and had to abort the trip and detour to dealer and lost all day. Excuse me if I am a little pissed but this shit getting to me now. Its a shame we have to liuve at the dealer, I don't like dealership that much. BMW needs to get their act together.

I thought and really believed I had dodged the bullet with the HPFP issue. Not so lucky. As luck would have it, it died on me tonight coming home from work. My fuel pump for sure. I had no hard cranks or anything of the tell tale signs. Was overtaking someone, I get on the gas and suddenly the car vibrates like its on two cylinders and lost power and I got the yellow :finger: smily. I continued on, slowed down, the smily went away and about 5 minutes later engine suddenly gave out. I stopped tried restarting 3 times for about 6-7 minutes before it suddenly came back to life as I was about to jab the SoS button. Then on my way again, and just as I was coming to a highway merge where two roads run into one, tada! F*ck! The car stutters coughs chokes and crawls down to no more than 5 miles an hour. I almost got rear-ended twice! The drivers honked at me angrily as if I had a choice, I was clearly stalled with my hazards on. Maybe its got something to do with being in a BMW? Wow people are damn mean!

Anyway I restarted and attempted to drive off as soon as I thought it was safe without morons flying around me. Got home, parked it and went to dinner in my reliable Toyota RAV 4. F*ck BMW man, can't they do better than this? My car been in the shop no less than 8 times since I have had it. My Toyota RAV has more miles without a single hitch, not even a missfire thus far. And my rattling wastegates make my BMW sound like a POS budget car. 15K and my pump is suddenly dead, no tell tale signs before this. I thought I had missed the bullet. Goes to show the OP on here who said all pumps will eventually fail was right on the money

Two years, 10,600 miles, early PROCEDE adopter, lead foot. Total repairs; BMW replaced streaking wiper blades under warranty. As 2XVanos said, luck of the draw.
