M57 powered LR Discovery
Hi all! I'm currently building a M57 powered Land-rover Discovery for off-road rallying. I know, it's not the car you guy's like, but I hope you like the engine... I am new to the BMW engines, so when I come to wire and plumb the M57 I will probably stumble up to some issues... Questions will follow... This is the project so far:
M57 with single mass flywheel conversion and gearbox adapter kit. ![]() Fits like a glove... ![]() ![]() The car... LR Discovery chassis (modified) and fiberglass body (except the doors)Pick-up conversion. ![]() ![]() ![]() |

I guess your best bet is to search online for an ISTA+ software packet. All schematics are included. It'll also help you to diagnose faults once you got it running.

Here are a few to get you started. The accelerator pedal signals are the module A_FWG. If you have ISTA+ it's much more comfortable to zoom in and the links give you close-ups of connector view and install location of sensors etc.

Interesting that it looks like the intake is inside the cabin. Cool build, I honestly like all cars and yes even electric ones as the technology becomes better they will too.

Who has a solution for my next problem? The original alternator is way to big for our car. It weighs a tonne and we don't need the 150 Amps charging capacity. And, most of all... it doesn't fit between the motor and the frame rails...
Is there a bolt-on alternative from another car? About 70 Amps would be sufficient. We can fabricate some brackets, but something bolt-on would be much nicer... I'm sure there are some M57 guru's around here.... ![]() ![]() |

With that said, I don't think there will be a plug-and-play replacement because your alternator is probably interfaced with the DDE using BSD, a BMW-proprietary variation on a family of low-speed serial protocols. Happily things will run just fine without it, but you'll almost certainly have to fab up a bracket and fit some smaller alternator with an internal regulator. I'm actually kind of interested in this myself, since whilst I have room for the full-sized unit, I don't actually need it either. But by the time all the belt routing etc. gets taken care of it'll be moderately complex... |
