Engine howl, whine, shake, hesitation then limp mode
So this happened today on my way to get my inspection
![]() Car is a 2011 328i RWD E91 AT with 100K on the clock. Driving along smoothly with no issues and started to hear a little whine coming from the engine. At first I thought it was the blower motor which happened in my e46 and was an easy fix, but it got louder and louder until at a stop light it started to shake and hesitate. pulled over and stopped the engine. popped the hood and no smoking nor oil spill, to be safe I decided to skip the inspection and just head back home. just before getting home I got the check engine light and went on limp mode, engine still howling. pulled in the garage now I can hear the engine rattle so I went and checked the codes. Codes: 2A87 2A7A I did a search for similar scenarios and found out it could be the valve cover CCV so decided to replace it since I have one in stock, planned to do pre-emptive maintenance and checked what else is the matter. Valve cover off and found the following to my dismay. INTAKE SIDE ![]() EXHAUST SIDE ![]() Tried finding those bolt heads but cant see anything from the top. Does this mean I will have to tear down the entire timing belt area? Is it a lost cause? |

Drain the oil/put a magnet in the drain hole/pull the pain and see if they came out. I believe I've seen people pull them out of the pan before during oil changes or oil pan gasket

There was a recall on these bolts on some engines, not sure which exactly as it wasn't N54 which I have.
