new 335d owner questions
I recently got myself 11' 335d, production date May 2010.
I also own 09' E91 (N52K, Mar-09) and 13' E70 (M57Y, Dec-12). I noticed minor differences. Few items are not clear if they are by design or not. eDipstick Both E91 and E70 have eDipstick. The E90 seems to be missing one. Does your's E90 335d has one? Navigation Screen Trim Screen E91 has plastic screen protector in front of the navigation display, part #2 (I can not touch display itself) E90 is missing one (I can touch the actual screen) E70 was designed without one Does your's E90 335d has one (plastic screen in front of the nav display)? Battery I know this topic has been beaten to death ![]() My E91 came with 94R flooded, I replaced it with 94R AGM The E90 has 48 AGM (aftermarket) I was under impression that 335d usually fitted with group 49 (due to higher electrical demand: starter, nav, DEF pump, heated fuel filter, glow plugs) What was yours (factory battery group size)? Anyone running group 48? Tools & Tow hook I could not find one in the car. Where it should be stored? Transmission The ZF 6HP has very noticeable rough shift from 2-nd to 3-rd under light or no load. Not noticeable under medium/hard acceleration. The fluid was never changed (this is one many service items on my list). My E70 has similar very light shift issue only when very cold, disappears in 3 minutes of driving. I've heard of some form of 6HP tune. Does it really work? I have a 2008 335d.
I have a physical dipstick, nothing on the idrive. My screen has a plastic protector which is angled so can’t touch the actual idrive screen. I use a battery from Halfords, a Yuasa HSB019 silver 12V car battery. Seems to do the job and was the same as the one previously fitted. Tow hook and tools should be located in the boot, left hand side behind a panel that just pulls out. My transmission was pretty rough until I got the xHp stage 3 gearbox remap. Completely transferred the car and made it much smoother to drive. Hope this helps. |

eDipstick
Both E91 and E70 have eDipstick. The E90 seems to be missing one. Does your's E90 335d has one? Presume since you're in SF,CA that you have a North American one. Dipstick should be on drivers side of engine with a red handle. See pic of my engine bay. Yes that cowl isn't standard E90/335d. Battery: Mine came with same 94R flooded. During warranty period it started lagging so dealer replaced with a Group 49 flooded. Later, I had that one go flat and bought another G49 from Oreilly and coded it. That first shift from 2->3 does suck. Its programmed in when the trans fluid is cold. I haven't tuned but am told that you can get rid of this. The picture was supposed to go into this same posting but I accidentally put it in next one down. See the red dipstick handle? Last edited by BB_cuda; 05-10-2021 at 12:59 PM.. |

BB_cuda - thanks a lot, appreciate it!
I am in SF, my E90 is NA 335d, production date May-2010 Both E90 & E70 has regular (normal) dipstick (as shown on your picture). The E90 has super easy access (to traditional one), the E70 one is hidden under the airbox My E70 has eDipstick, item #17 shown here It lets you check oil level in the iDrive menu (without opening the hood) While I do prefer to use mechanical one for accurate measurement, the eDipstick is nice to get an overall oil level picture. It seems that NA E90 M57Y was never fitted with eDipstick. However, it is shown on the diagram here (it also lacks LP EGR that makes difference on the CBU level) My E91 (N52) has leaky oil pan gasket, E70 (M57Y) - pulls 1.2L of oil over 10K miles through CCV (I have provent 200 installed myself to further offset CBU) The eDipstick on E91 (N52) is accurate, but very slow (takes 10 min to show the oil level). The eDipstick on E70(M57Y) is quick and very accurate. Last edited by POBEP; 05-10-2021 at 03:25 PM.. |

However, the CIC/iDrive oil level has menu option hidden/disabled. The only info user gets is in the form of notification when oil level drops below minimum level Just like TPMS sensors: while they report battery life, pressure and temperature, the E90 iDrive does not show it |

I see you also have a 2013 X5d. You likely have noticed that the idrive reading is also never same as the dipstick. Just be practical and only use the real dipstick reading no matter which D your checking.
Not sure about your 2016 F25 though. I see that is the 2.0L diesel in an X3 chassis. Pretty neat. |

![]() I found my X5d eDipstick very accurate. After I turn off car, wait 5 min and then check regular dipstick - there is no noticeable measurement value differences. Quote:
It appears that N47 CCV oil separator works much better than M57. No real need to monitor engine oil level, at least for now. The manual calls for LL12FE. Blackstone report showed disappointing results. I switched to LL04 after the free maintenance expired - hope it will get better. At least I no longer hear turbo spin-up noise on initial acceleration. Most BMW diesel emission gremlins were addressed in the F-series with N47 motor. However, it had its own set of challenges - falling parking sensors - zero rail pressure (occasional no-start) - faulty rear door struts (twice) - wrong ECU-2-engine factory wiring harness assembly - peeling rim paint - horrible factory tires & alignment - driver window rattle - corrosion at various suspension parts (car never saw snow/salt) - various minor noticeable factory assembly deficiencies. HUD and top view camera are awesome. Adaptive steering works great in the city, especially in a parking lot. Collision system saved me & family at least once. Sport mode improves electric steering response on highway. Overall very nice car, my SO loves it. It's fun to see other drivers panic at gas station when I fill diesel ![]() |

It was replaced earlier this year with NAPA 7548, group 48 100AH WET. Last few days IBS went nuts - it now thinks battery is fully discharged. I may try changing VO to non-AGM - hope it will quiet IBS down. |

I have nearly identical setup on my E70 (M57Y + ZF 6HP). When I changed TC oil and performed adaptation drive the 6HP became super smooth in all gears (I can not feel shit points at all, you can only hear/see engine rev change) I took 335d for a several 3-5 hours drives and strangely enough the 2-3 shift jerk went away. The 425 foot pounds of torque (in the sedan) is indeed incredible, especially on the long twisty mountains roads. |

Yea that harsh 2-3 shift under light load when cold is a programming thing. BMW could have done much better. My car has almost always done this, but never more than once a day when first starting out. Had the fluid changed (ZF-OEM) filter, and magnatronic seals replaced at 105K miles. Help the shifting a bit, but did not completely eliminate. At 105K miles the fluid looked fine and there was nothing in the pan.

I have the xhp3 map on my car and the fluid had never been changed at 130k. It was jerky in all gears but particularly 1-2 and 2-3.
I've just had the fluid changed and the adaptations reset and it's made a huge difference - definitely recommend it. Make sure you get the job done by someone who will change the seals too |

Following up my previous posting. I checked with www.bmwdirectparts.com where I buy when I must use OE parts. Here is a table of part numbers and cost from Husker BMW (they are bmwdirectparts.com). The very last 2 parts are for an electrical cable tray not offered in North America. I got them from Denmark supplier. That company is Schmiedmann
M3 cowl parts huskerparts 64-31-6-958-817 housing, microfilter, lower, left 103.01 64-31-6-958-818 housing, microfilter, lower, right 99.91 64-31-6-958-815 housing, microfilter top section, left 166.51 64-31-6-958-816 housing, microfilter top section, right 166.51 64-31-9-159-606 active charcoal filter 46.25 51-71-8-045-623 REAR ENGINE HOOD SEALING 25.44 64-31-9-144-869 Covering left 54.9 64-31-9-144-870 Covering right 54.9 12-52-7-838-732 cover ? Check Schmiedmnn.com (Denmark) 12-52-7-838-733 lower tray ? I paid $276 for first 8 parts. They currently go for (gulp) $717 from Husker. Some of these can possibly be sourced from salvage yard but 64-31-6-958-815/64-31-6-958-816 are typically in bad shape and they unforetunately are the most expensive two parts. Good luck |

kbsilver bennyball maryjane - thank you for your feedback!
I had similar experience with E70/6HP - oil change (at 60K, no seals), adaptation reset followed by re-learn drive == silk smooth shifting. I was not able to find local shop that would do 6HP service (including seals) for a reasonable price. SF/Bay Area it is crazy expensive, all South Lake Tahoe shops refused to take BMW/diesel at all My current TC oil change plan is FCP order, 4 jackstands and new learning experience. |

Dropped valve body and replaced seals. No metal shavings, oil was on the darker side, no burn smell The 2nd-3rd shift is now barely noticeable - nothing like the jolt before the oil change. Flushed diff & ps fluids, replaced all filters, failed rear window seals, trunk wiring boot & struts. On a hot day I can hear noise coming from under body at highway speeds. Noise level is proportional to outside temp and vehicle speed. Switching to N at highway speed makes no difference - rules out engine/exhaust Perhaps cheap (rear) tires or driveshaft bearing |
