Gonna get tuned, suggestions in 2021?

It's tune time! Everything was going great, car seemed like it was good...really starting to love it then, “ding”, 200 miles to no start. I can tell this first gen emissions bs is going to be a redundant and expensive headache as many on here have found,. My opinion is a well tuned post 2000's car is still better than the 25yo+ grand-fathered exempt status the state requires for emissions, like the old 70s-80s cars with no emissions and antiquated engineering. I've read lots of posts on here regarding different tune options, however many were from 3+ years ago, nothing too recent that I found. Leaning towards AAR out of Georgia. I reached out to them and their customer service was great and answered many questions before they were asked. Another company I reached out to only does services in house, to the tune of 3600, and that wasn't an option for me, price and distance wise.

Long story short, who has the best tune in 2021? Want to keep it modest, I'm not tracking this car, but still want stronger, better, faster...more reliable. Looking for suggestions for those who have gone this route and are happy with what they got in the long run. I will do all the mechanics, (deletes, DP, gutting or straight-piping the SCR). Ideally I would just like to send my DDE in to have is flashed all the while I'm doing the deletes. Thanks...Dylan

I have BRR and couldn’t be happier. He is in FL and knows these engines inside and out. I have driven a 335d with the same mods as mine but different tune and doesn’t feel as quick. I’d definitely put BRR on the short list.

Yeah, I've heard many many good things about Ryan and BRR, his knowledge, and his success with Santjer Performance...next level stuff. Just having a real hard time finding him, and I'm not on Facebook so I can't really look there. So...if anyone wants to help a brother out (please help, lol, I only have 100 miles left with some delete parts on the way) please send me a PM. I shot a few PM's out but think maybe I'm too new for them to get to the recipient?

I went with JR

They also offer a tablet solution so you don't have to remove your ECU.

Thank you to the two gracious members on here who gave me BRR's contact info, I will reach out to him before the weekend and let him know who referred me.

I'm sure that JR tune is wicked but I think it might be a little a little too much for what I'm after, power and price wise. I just want to make this more reliable and working to it's full potential without over-doing it. I got my kicks back in the day with a very modded ZX-10R so I hope I got the "I wanna go fast" out of my system, lol.

I had thought about going the tablet route just so I can keep everything at home, but I'm just afraid I'd brick my car, or the battery dies mid-session, or some weird "luck of the Irish" thing happening. I think on a bench you take out more of the unknown variables with a constant reliable power supply, knowledgeable technician, etc. IDK, that's just me though...

Got a hold of Ryan via text. Answered some of my questions. His tunes are 1k now and he only has one of them for stock turbos, which I thought was kinda odd since other tuners have multiple stages. Then it occurred to me, his one tune for stock turbos is probably damn near the perfect one, and it traps 113.4 in the 1/4.

We texted back a forth then he asked me where I live. I replied with the town I live in Oregon and haven't heard a thing back for a few days. I'm very much a "leave the ball in your court" guy and I don't want to hound somebody to give them business. I assume he's very busy or doesn't want to deal with somebody across the US who has to ship their DDE. Anyway, it's all good. Decided to go with JR 2.5 and probably the tranny tune as well, I already got the EGR delete and sf deletes from AAR who is a distributor for that tune.

I just really want to start enjoying this car, regardless of getting it tuned or not. It's just that it turned out that way due to the overly complicated and unreliable emissions and the 200 to no start. I had planned on seeing my family down south and that warning put be back a few weekends. In all honestly, I'm not going to have a lot of before and after impressions since there wasn't too much of a "before" for me so I'm sure I would've been very pleased with either tune.

Thanks again for those who helped me get in touch with him, great group of people on here!

Yeah, those tanks have been in and out about half doz times already. They are topped off for sure. The only other thing I found in my research is the urea injector gets clogged at the nozzle and gives that countdown.

I just had the whole alphabet deleted and a new exhaust installed. The ECU had to be overnighted to the tune my euro folks. I had the work done while I was out of town but it only took 3 days. Circumstances of buying the car ment the people I bought it from up in Tacoma did the work. I am sure you could find an indy in PDX that could do the same for you.

Just to follow up...

I did get a tune, the JR 2.5 from AAR. Great customer service and super fast turn around time. Shipped Tues am from west coast and got back Friday. Ended up trying to save a few bucks and got an E-bay downpipe, Rev-9. Please, nobody ever get that thing, it sucked everywhere. The fitment was crap, the bolts supplied were too big, the temp bung didn't have anything to bottom out the sensor so I had to get creative, it was a major headache and I would have gladly spent the extra money for a better one. Did all the other delete stuff also EGR, SCR, etc...

Overall happy with the tune, no more emission related issues and the CBU should be mitigated / resolved. Being I got the car actually running well a few hundred miles before I decided to delete, I don't have a good frame of reference of before and after. There are some minor issues still, will save for a future post if I can't track my hunches down. Thinking a tranny tune to match the engine tune might resolve some of them tho...

Check our vrsf for a downpipe they have the best cheapest option out there imo. I have it on mine and fitment was perfect and they also included a gasket for the connection to the midpipe and hardware. I would get the transmission tune stage 1 if ur looking for fuel economy. I believe that's their recommendation at least because I don't have it yet. As far as "cat"back exhaust the cheapest drop in option is the ATM with straight pipes and no mufflers. I have mine straight piped and a delete tune and it does smell a tad bit, but its nothing crazy. I only will smell it if im around the back of the car with the engine running.
